The Centre for Justice, Law & Society at Jindal Global Law School is 15 years old. Initially founded as one of the pioneering research centers at JGLS in 2009, CJLS has consistently addressed contemporary issues at the intersection of law, justice, society, and marginalization in South Asia. In the past 15 years, we have had the privilege of learning and unlearning from various scholars, activists and movements, including the Trans Movement, among others. This journey has been one of humility and enrichment, as we continuously engage with diverse perspectives and experiences. Our work over the past decade and a half have been made possible through the invaluable contributions of our partners and collaborators, comprising scholars, activists, communities, students, artists and many colleagues at JGU and outside. The collective efforts have played a pivotal role in shaping the trajectory of the Centre. We would like to express our gratitude to each one of you for making this possible. In commemoration of our journey, we will host a series of events, including talks by distinguished scholars worldwide, our flagship symposium in March and October, lecture series, consultations, workshops and other initiatives aimed at fostering critical discourse on issues of law, justice and critique.

The JGLS Research Deans’ Office (RDO) is excited to announce that an article authored by 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐟𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐨𝐫 (𝐃𝐫.) Dipika Jain, Professor and Vice Dean (Research), Vice Dean (Clinical Legal Education, Jindal Global Law School) and Director, Centre for Justice, Law and Society (CJLS) at Jindal Global Law School (JGLS), titled, “𝐂𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤𝐞𝐫𝐬, 𝐜𝐨𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐢𝐬𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐭𝐞𝐬𝐭: 𝐚 𝐜𝐚𝐬𝐞 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐟𝐞𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐬𝐭 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐚𝐧𝐭𝐢-𝐜𝐚𝐩𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐬𝐭 𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐚𝐠𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐬𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐞” has been published by 𝐅𝐞𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐬𝐭 𝐓𝐡𝐞𝐨𝐫𝐲, a SAGE Journals Publication (Q1 #SCOPUS-indexed Journal). Nation-wide organised protests by Accredited Social Health Activists (ASHAs), arguably the backbone of India’s fragmented healthcare system, form a watershed moment in feminist protest in India by centring demands for the regularisation of their ‘voluntary’ and undercompensated work. This distinct subaltern group (the ASHAs) engages with the state through dynamic political protest. In this article, Prof. (Dr.) Jain critically explores the protest strategies adopted by ASHAs to better understand feminist protest on the Indian political landscape. She adopts a reflexive method of inquiry by unpacking how ASHA policy perpetuates institutional patterns of gender-based occupational segregation and how ASHAs, in turn, navigate and respond to these challenges. Somewhere between victimhood and agency, ASHA workers have reclaimed a site of struggle and resistance. Indeed, in the face of gender-based discrimination, ASHA workers are agitating on their own terms. A postcolonial feminist lens allows us to explore the axes of resistance adopted by ASHAs, including their medium of protest, which offers a space for different performative strategies: the self-sustained and self-contained leadership and mobilisation in which ASHAs reject gender-based stereotypes, exclusion, disadvantage and discrimination; and the use of protest to build sites of resistance, solidarity and negotiation. This theoretical framework offers valuable insight by shifting focus away from judicial strategies and towards ASHA workers as ‘protesters’ and as authors of their own narrative. We are extremely proud of Prof. (Dr.) Jain’s achievement, and hope that you critically engage with her work and find it informative! Bi-Annual Team Retreat: Celebrating Achievements, Growth, and Inspiration! On December 6th, 2024, we came together for our Bi-Annual Team Treat, and what a fantastic day it turned out to be! We warmly welcomed our newest team members, fostering a sense of belonging in our ever-evolving family. The day began with an exciting icebreaker, setting a lively tone for what followed. Each team member shared project updates, showcasing their dedication and the strides made in our work. A moment of pride? Concluding 126 legal aid cases! The highlight of the day was an enriching session by Prof. Nupur Chowdhury on Research Methods and Publications. Her insights emphasized the responsibility of a good scholar, explored the politics of knowledge production, and delved into the process of publication—all while engaging us in a deeply interactive and thought-provoking discussion. We also reflected on 15 incredible years of the Centre, celebrating milestones, breakthroughs, and our collective journey of advocacy, scholarship, reflexive pedagogy and work ahead. This was followed by a stimulating discussion about the readings for our monthly group, further fueling our commitment to critical dialogue and unlearning. A day filled with laughter, fun, and absolute chaos (the good kind!). Got to bond with colleagues, share stories, and dive into new ideas and interests together. Here's to more days like this—where work feels less like work and more like a journey of discovery with wonderful people. Grateful for this incredible opportunity to connect, learn, and grow as a team. Here's to the transformative work we've done and the impactful journeys ahead! #TeamTreat #15YearsOfImpact #LegalAid #KnowledgeProduction #ScholarlyGrowth #CentreHighlights Dipika Jain Anmol Diwan Ahana Bag Vrishti S.
