The shallow aquifer and a city suburb. Kyathsandra is a suburb of Tumakuru city . Famous for its Thatte idli , the suburb of Tumakuru has issues with water supply. A 24/7 water supply scheme has been under construction for several years and yet there is no sign of completion . People in this part of the town get water occasionally. Shankar and team of well diggers clean up a well . The well is a hundred and 10 years old and filled with rubbish. All of it is removed up to a depth of 36 feet . A coat of lime ash applied and water disinfected with alum and then bleaching powder . A 26.50 feet column of water stands in this 9 feet diameter well. A steel grill will be placed for safety and security and pulleys installed to lift water . Perhaps a pump too to place water into a small tank for easy drawal of water. The community around will use it for non potable purpose . A lake nearby provides recharge for the shallow aquifer . The project is implemented with CSR funding and with the City Corporation in the know . Revisiting local sources of water Rainwater , lakes , aquifers and treated used water is building water resilience for communities, especially the poorer ones.

Water and a metropolis. The lake is about 40 km from Bengaluru and is known as Doddakere - big lake. It has a huge catchment area for rainwater to flow from . It is also supplemented with treated used water coming from the metropolis. Currently about 140 million litres per day is being pumped from three Wastewater treatment plants and filling 65 lakes. Doddakere is one of them. The lake recharges the shallow aquifer and saturates it . The shallow aquifer itself is about 80 feet deep till it hits a saprolite layer . The extant of the storage of the shallow aquifer itself, its transmissivity are all under determination. The quality of the water is good enough to be supplied as drinking water with a water treatment plants. The well here is brimming and has a stored water of 1 million litres. The aquifer should have a potential running into thousands of millions of litres. By integrating rainwater, lakes , aquifers and treated used water there is enormous potential to bring water for all for life and livelihoods and water security for all at a regional scale. The proposal in Bengaluru if worked well can fill 1100 lakes up to a distance of a 100 km from the city. The city itself becoming a water factory . It will require segregation of industrial wastewater away from the domestic sewage network and to its own Effluent Treatment Plants, collecting all domestic sewage and treating them to adequate standards, filling the lakes and preventing local pollution of lakes/aquifers and finally investments to make this happen. From a wastewater surveillance perspective, checks are on for heavy metals, pesticides, pharmaceutical residues, AMR/ARG, emerging contaminants, and the different strains of bacteria present in all the waters. The implementation process is under way and currently 640 KLD of treated water can be supplied to the town of Devanahalli. Managed aquifer recharge is one step in the journey towards water resilience. Biome Trust is happy to be part of this journey and contribute in collaboration with various partners and funders to make these projects happen.

  • Arsenic, Fluoride, and Nitrates — the toxic trio quietly lurking in our drinking water. From arsenic’s deadly cancer risk to fluoride’s effects on bone health, and nitrates’ dangerous impact on infants, these contaminants pose serious, often invisible threats. Yet, many go undetected without proper testing. With millions at risk globally, it’s crucial to understand these pollutants, their sources, and how to protect yourself. Smart filtration systems, regular water testing, and informed choices can help reduce exposure. It’s time to take control of what’s in your water!

  • Vishwanath S, Founder of Biome Environmental Trust, presented at the "Waste to Worth" national workshop, emphasizing the urgent need for innovative wastewater reuse solutions to tackle India's growing water challenges. Organized by Centre for Science and Environment, New Delhi and Namami Gange(NMCG), the workshop showcased projects highlighting the potential of treated wastewater in urban areas. CSE’s report, "Waste to Worth: Managing India’s Urban Water Crisis through Wastewater Reuse," provides an overview of Karnataka's policies facilitating wastewater reuse, emphasizing regulatory frameworks that encourage sustainable practices and innovative local solutions. Projects Highlighted from Karnataka:  -HN VALLEY: REUSE OF TREATED WATER FOR SHALLOW AQUIFER RECHARGE THROUGH LAKE RECHARGE This initiative focuses on improving groundwater levels in drought-prone areas by directing treated water to 65 tanks across Bengaluru Urban, Bengaluru Rural, and Chikkaballapur districts, benefiting agriculture, aquifers, and community water security. -DEVANAHALLI TOWN: ENHANCING SHALLOW AQUIFER RECHARGE FOR DOMESTIC USE The Devanahalli Project includes a SEZ tertiary treatment plant that treats domestic wastewater, integrating shallow aquifer recharge within the town's formal water supply for domestic use while ensuring safety standards are met. The project revitalized Sihineeru Lake and nearby wells, supplying 30,104 KL of water over 189 days and benefiting approximately 38,000 residents. -CHIKKASAGARAHALLI LAKE: SHALLOW AQUIFER RECHARGE FOR AGRICULTURE USING TREATED WATER The Chikkasagarahalli Lake Revitalization Project used treated water and desilted rejuvenated Chikkasagrahalli Lake, increasing its capacity to recharge shallow aquifers, supporting irrigation for floriculture, and reducing dependency on tanker water. Key Recommendations from Vishwanath S:  -Caution against filling lakes to full capacity with treated wastewater to mitigate flooding risks.  -Use a constructed wetland as the first lake in cascading systems for further treatment of incoming wastewater.  -Tailor Karnataka's reuse models to specific terrains rather than replicating them elsewhere. The workshop served as a crucial platform for discussing sustainable water management practices, underscoring the need for robust policies and community engagement to promote treated wastewater reuse as a valuable resource. By transforming wastewater into a resource rather than waste, we can build a more resilient framework for urban water management in India. #WastewaterReuse #WaterManagement #Sustainability #BiomeEnvironmentalTrust #ClimateResilience
