India's gig economy is poised for extraordinary growth, with projections indicating a dramatic expansion in the coming years. The opportunities are immense, but are we ensuring everyone gets a fair shot? NITI Aayog reports (India's Booming Gig and Platform Economy (June 2022)) that over 47% of gig workers are in medium-skill jobs and 31% in low-skilled positions, but comprehensive demographic information remains scarce. This data gap makes it challenging to address specific needs and vulnerabilities within the workforce. The Code on Social Security, designed to provide essential protections for gig workers, is still in the process of being implemented across states. This leaves many workers, especially women, in a precarious position without adequate safeguards. Women Economic Empowerment (WEE) is taking proactive steps to address these challenges and unlock the gig economy's potential for women along with partners like Airblack and Frontier Markets. With these interventions we're expanding gig opportunities in underserved rural regions while overcoming mobility barriers through innovative digital platforms.
