Varanasi Weavers and Artisans Society (VWAS), functions as a marketing platform benefiting the small, marginal weavers through a decentralized approach. It recognizes the marginal constituency, within an exploitative and skewed ecosystem, with several stakeholders that have sought to commercialize their craft, yet maintain the overall status quo Propelled by the loss of markets, declining skills, and difficulty catering to new markets, many artisans have migrated in distress situations to urban centers in search of low, unskilled employment in industry. To address this problem, AIACA implemented this project supported by HCLFoundation began in April 2022, which aimed at contributing to the economic competitiveness of the Indian handloom sector and promoting the well-being of 400 handloom artisans through a hub and spoke model in Varanasi and Barabanki (Uttar Pradesh). Project initiated to empower 400 weavers and Zardozi workers in Varanasi and Barabanki, with support from HCLFoundation under its #HCLUday Program AIACA, with support from HCLFoundation, has generated a ground-breaking impact to sustain VWAS, including facilitation for onboarding on platforms such as Okhai and Go Coop and with buyers like Sasha, Vandana, and others. AIACA has also facilitated VWAS in many Governmental and non-government exhibitions, which has increased their income significantly. At the Flipkart Foundation, we believe in the power of partnerships to create lasting change. Yesterday [27th November], this belief came to life at Sampark 2024, hosted at the India Habitat Center, New Delhi. This year's theme, "Inclusive Pathways to Social Impact," resonated deeply with our commitment to fostering collaborative solutions for sustainable development. The event brought together an inspiring mix of voices that align with India's priorities and global Sustainable Development Goals. From thought-provoking panel discussions on entrepreneurship and skill development to insightful conversations on the role of technology in driving inclusive growth, the energy and ideas shared were truly transformative. I extend my warmest gratitude to all our dignitaries - Mr. Dhanendra Kumar, Mr Atul Satija, Mr. Amit Kumar, Mr. Mangesh Wange, Ms. Rema Mohan, Ms. Shobhini Mukerji, Mr. Anish Kumar, Mr Aniket Doegar, and Dr. Nidhi Pundhir - for their invaluable contributions, insights, and support that enriched the discussions and made Sampark 2024 a truly impactful event. It was also a moment of pride to recognize the exemplary contributions of five NGO partners - AIACA, Haqdarshak, Pratham Infotech Foundation, Smile Foundation, and SM Sehgal Foundation who have been instrumental in empowering marginalized communities. Sampark 2024 also showcased the Flipkart Foundation’s incredible journey through its Annual Report and the Second FKF Compendium, sharing impactful stories of change since its inception in 2022. The milestones celebrated remind us that when we unite resources, expertise, and compassion, the possibilities are endless. Craftmark Craftmark, since its inception in 2006, continues to build “integrity”, “quality” and “authenticity” as core values to endorse the traditions associated with genuine handicrafts from all across India. In contemporary times, when mechanization is impacting all facets of our lives, the craft sector is also facing the impact of misrepresentation of crafts and the inability of consumers to distinguish handmade products from counterfeit alternatives. This certification system aims to strengthen the market positioning of authentic handmade products made by artisans while ensuring adherence to sustainable and ethical practices. So far, Craftmark has touched the lives and crafts of more than 1,78,635 artisans, Additionally, Craftmark has certified more than 280 entities practicing more than 174 crafts. AIACA ensures a smooth and efficient verification process before awarding Craftmark to enterprises/Collectives/Master artisans of Craftmark. This is achieved through teams and associates spread all over different states, who oversee that the products are made while respecting the traditional practices/process of the craft and the hard work of the artisans. We are on a mission to authentic the genuine craft process in India and bring forward the hands behind preserving the heritage and creating a greener tomorrow.
