Are you still using AI as a buzzword?

𝗦𝘁𝗼𝗽 𝗯𝗼𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗔𝗜. Can you bare with the hard truth? Saying you use AI today is like an accountant bragging they switched from paper to Excel—congratulations, you’ve caught up with the minimum standard. As a customer, I don't care about the tool. I care about results. 𝗧𝗲𝗹𝗹 𝗺𝗲: 𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝗶𝘀 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗔𝗜 𝗴𝗼𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗼 𝘀𝗼𝗹𝘃𝗲 𝗺𝘆 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗯𝗹𝗲𝗺? What real-world impact will it deliver for my business? At the end of the day, it’s not about the tech you use—it’s what you achieve with it that counts. How do YOU invest?

Hola Daisy Founder I China Topline Turbo

"𝗔𝗹𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗜𝗻𝘃𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝗨𝗞 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗿𝘁𝘆"… "𝗬𝗶𝗲𝗹𝗱𝘀 𝗨𝗽 𝘁𝗼 𝟭𝟮%"… "𝗟𝗼𝗻𝗴-𝗧𝗲𝗿𝗺 𝗔𝘀𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝗥𝗲𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗻𝘀." These catchy phrases immediately caught my attention when I saw the British Chamber of Commerce Shanghai (BritCham Shanghai) event titled “Alternative Investment Series: Invest in UK Property.” Naturally, I attended, eager to question the panelists on these bold claims. My skepticism was well-founded. As is often the case, when something sounds too good to be true, it usually is. Eddy Tao, panelist from Berkeley Group Plc, mentioned that you might expect a 5-7% yield from investing in their development projects—no guarantees, of course. Taxes were a hot topic at the event. A Chinese lady from the audience asked, “I’m buying an expensive property in London. How can I reduce stamp duty? I already have three properties there.” The panel’s collective response? “You can’t.” On the bright side, there’s a double taxation agreement between the UK and China, which may help you avoid paying taxes twice on your income. Another topic that sparked intense discussion was inheritance tax—set at a hefty 40% in the UK. Personally, I’m not a big fan of property investment. There’s a widespread misconception that real estate appreciation is stable and inevitable. But look at Shanghai and Hong Kong—residential property prices are down 20-30% since COVID, and it’s uncertain they’ll ever return to their peak. Moreover, investors often overlook hidden costs and risks, such as maintenance issues, tenant problems, and unexpected accidents. Realistically, yields are often lower than expected. And when it comes to investment products, the picture isn't any rosier. Brokers and fund managers profit from transactions, not from creating value for their clients. This creates an inherent conflict of interest. As Mike Braun once told me, there’s no shortcut or easy win in investing. Ignore the herd mentality—market volatility is driven by emotions, not facts. To achieve satisfactory returns, you must do your homework. That’s precisely what I’m doing: learning to read financial statements and annual reports, and immersing myself in the writings of Warren Buffett, who generously shares his investment philosophy in his letters to shareholders. What about you? What do you invest in? Big thanks to the panelists James Macdonald from Savills, Nan Su from KPMG US, Robbie Chen from TEP, Eddy Tao from Berkeley Group Plc, Ian Bell from Bluestar AMG, Kassian Polin, CFA from The Bank of East Asia, Limited (BEA) and moderator Linmao LI. #UKproperty #Investment

What's happening now in China's consumer market?

    查看Daisy Tang的档案,图片

Hola Daisy Founder I China Topline Turbo

If you’re avoiding China’s consumer market, you’re missing out. Despite headlines about China’s slowing economy, some consumer segments are thriving more than ever. Here are a few examples: 𝗗𝗿 𝗟𝗼𝗼𝘀𝗲𝗻 is a fine wine producer from the Mosel River region in Germany. By 2022, the brand accounted for 15% of total German wine imports by value to China. In 2023, their revenue in China hit a record high. To fuel this growth, Dr. Loosen parted ways with their longtime distributor Summergate, opting instead to establish their own China-based company to handle import and distribution in-house. They offer products priced from USD 20 to over USD 100 per bottle. (Photos: Visiting Ernst Loosen, owner of Dr Loosen, at his vineyard this summer.) 𝗩𝗲𝗿𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿 is an Italian artisan jewellery platform. In just four years, they expanded from a small showroom to occupying an entire floor, with a second location soon opening in one of Shanghai’s top landmarks on the Bund. The average spend per visit is around USD2,800. 𝗙𝗹𝗮𝗶𝗿 is a rooftop bar restaurant at the The Ritz-Carlton Hotel Company, L.L.C. Pudong, known for its stunning 270-degree night views and a menu tailored to the Chinese palate. In their outdoor area, a small table carries a minimum charge of USD225 and a large table USD490. I visited Flair on a Tuesday evening and it was packed. China is not a market for those seeking quick wins: the cost of doing business is rising, the competition is fierce, the eco-system is fragmented and complex… However, as the second largest consumer market in the world, China offers potential that many other markets don’t. If your brand has saturated your home market, China can be where you fulfil your ambition for growth. So, what’s holding your brand back from entering China? ☕ Have you been to Kicking Beans? A boutique café in Shanghai like no other. I’m a coffee lover. I have visited cafés around the world: from Melbourne to Stockholm, Chiangmai to Nagoya. I can assure you that Kicking Beans is special. What makes Kicking Beans special? Community sounds like an overused marketing jargon; but Regina Lian, the founder and roaster of Kicking Beans, is what a marketer would call a community builder. Community - at the bottom of it - is people. Wherever Regina goes, people follow. They follow her infectious positive energy, unparalleled humour, and of course, her excellent coffee delivered consistently and at affordable prices - a price/value ratio 性價比 that Chinese consumers prioritize, especially in today’s environment. When I think of Kicking Beans, I can’t help but come up with fun designs for their branding. I made some doodles about the kicking “K” and shared them with Regina. Guess what? She has applied them in her new cáfe (see cushions in photo). Regina and I met when we were both new to Shanghai. Since then, she has gone beyond her way to support me. Regina is what makes Kicking Beans special.

We fixed our logo! Finally, a genuine smile =)

Hola Daisy Founder I China Topline Turbo

After six years of grappling with Hola Daisy’s logo design, I’ve finally figured out the issue. Happy customers spend more, so we spell "Hola" with a smile. However, the smiling face of “Hola” never sat right with me. Despite numerous iterations since Hola Daisy’s establishment in 2018, something about the logo always felt off, but I couldn’t pinpoint what it was. 💡 Then, during a recent morning meditation session, it struck me: when people put on a fake smile, they move their lips, but their eyes remain unchanged. A genuine smile lies not just in the mouth, but in the eyes as well. Voilà!

About the brand name "Hola Daisy"

    查看Daisy Tang的档案,图片

Hola Daisy Founder I China Topline Turbo

Let me tell you a secret about my brand name, Hola Daisy. Hola Daisy is a pick-up line in disguise. When people see my WeChat name “Hola Daisy” for the first time, they would (rather mindlessly) read out loud “Hola Daisy”. I’d immediately answer: “Hola!” - as if they have just said “Hello Daisy” in Spanish. They’d then realize the trick and smile. It works every time! Think about it: everyday, there’s someone saying hello to me in Spanish. Isn’t that wonderful?

I, too, want to change people’s lives by supporting entrepreneurs with their communications and hence, accelerating their business growth. Founders have the responsibility to persuade investors and customers, yet they often struggle with their persuasion skills. What communication obstacle are you facing today?

Greener future with Julius Baer and Formula E

    查看Daisy Tang的档案,图片

Hola Daisy Founder I China Topline Turbo

Did you know about Formula E? Think of it as "Formula One: Electrified" - racing with a focus on sustainability and e-mobility. I'd say it's an elegant alternative to traditional motorsport: the same excitement for performance and speed, minus the engine’s roaring sound and fuel emission. Julius Bär, a Swiss private banking group, is a founding partner of Formula E and the host of last night’s event. While the evening was about EV adoption and environmental awareness, I’m guilty to admit, that my focus was on the delicious food, fun conversations, and of course, getting a signature from the Brazilian racer Lucas di Grassi. (See photo) 😚 🌟 5 stars to St. Regis Hotels & Resorts's catering and thank you Angela Lu for the invitation. Want to learn more about Formula-E?
