As we conclude our “Meet the Team” series, we’ve saved the best for last. To speak of brilliance without mentioning Augustine Hamwela would be a misstep—a true disservice to the legal field. With over 18 years of experience as an Advocate of the High Court of Zambia, Augustine possesses deep expertise in the legal frameworks and policies governing financial institutions and complex global transactions. Throughout his illustrious career, he has held prominent roles, including with Standard Chartered Bank, where he served as Regional Head of Compliance for Retail Banking and Wealth Management across Africa and the Middle East. Before that, he was Head of Legal for Zambia and Southern Africa. Augustine also served as Legal Counsel for the National Pension Scheme Authority (NAPSA). Before embarking on a decade-long in-house career, he spent five years in private practice with MNB Legal Practitioners (now Nchito & Nchito). He holds both a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in Law (Commercial Law) from the University of Zambia and is a member of the Zambian Branch of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (CIArb). He currently serves on the Board of the Financial Intelligence Centre (FIC), Zambia’s Financial Intelligence Unit, and is an accredited Insolvency Practitioner and Notary Public. Known for his photographic memory and eloquent style, Augustine combines wit and idiom with skillful advocacy. Witnessing his iconic court performances, where he blends precision, humor, and charm, is like watching Hamlet brought to life. His confidence captivates, his cheekiness endears, and he embodies the rare artistry of law. He loves to close complex transactions and is a skilled transactional lawyer. Outside the courtroom, Augustine is a devoted husband and father, a loyal Liverpool supporter, and a man of refined taste with a love for travel. Known for his blend of class and simplicity, his passion for singing, and a voice as pure as a hermit thrush’s song, he brings joy to those around him.
