Description
English: General Gordon's monument In Queen's Park. The eastern plinth inscription reads:

MAJOR GENERAL CHARLES GEORGE GORDON, CB ROYAL FUSILIERS SOLDIER. ADMINISTRATOR. PHILANTHROPIST BORN AT WOOLWICH, FEBRUARY 28TH 1833 SLAIN AT KARTOUM, JANUARY 16TH 1885

His last letter to his sister closed with the words I am quite happy to thank God, and like Lawrence I have tried to do my duty.

The north and south sides of the plinth record Gordon's campaigns. THE CRIMEA 1855-6 CHINA 1862-64 THE SOUDAN 1874-79 and 1884-5

The western plinth is more ephemeral reading: James Bishop, Mayor 1885 W.Cooper, Deputy Chairman M.B.C.Bennett, Borough Surveyor
