Are there any animals, plants, characters, mythical creatures, etc. you'd like to see used as inspiration for Digimon designs? I like to design my own fan Digimon from time to time, and I particularly like trying ideas that haven't been used for official Digimon yet. After some time, I've noticed that there are quite a lot of interesting concepts that Bandai could be using, if only they weren't satisfied with just making another "dragon but with x element"... So here are some things I think would be cool to see as Digimon!
And for the record, no this isn't me fishing for Digifake ideas, I just really like hearing from other fans about this kind of stuff... That being said, I can't promise you I won't try any of the suggestions in this thread :3c
- Pangolin
- These little scale-armored cuties are my favorite non-feline mammal, and are just all-around very cool animals. They're sometimes confused with armadillos by laypeople, but they're really not related at all, and in my opinion armadillos aren't nearly as lovable. One good route to take with a pangolinmon could be to change their keratinous scales into metal scale armor, make them into a little knight or something. They even come with their own built in bladed weapons!
- Archeopteryx
- There aren't enough feathery dinosaur Digimon in my opinion. In fact, I think if you discount all the Bird-types (yes, birds are dinosaurs; the science on that is pretty well-established at this point), then the only example of a non-avian dinosaur Digimon with feathers is Allomon, and even then it just looks like it's wearing them rather than them being a part of its body. What better way to remedy this, then, than to use the iconic "missing link" between modern birds and non-avian dinosaurs, the archeopteryx?
- Psittacosaurus
- You may have seen the absolutely adorable reconstruction of Psittacosaurus from 2016 that went somewhat viral a couple years back that was touted as the "most accurate reconstruction of a dinosaur ever". Honestly, you wouldn't even have to change much about it to make it look like a typical Child Digimon; it's got big baby eyes, a little hint of a smile in its beak, the bristles on its tail could be incorporated into its attacks; maybe they could work like a porcupine's quills. I think a Psittacomon could make for a great main character Digimon personally.
- Futakuchi-onna
- One of my favorite youkai, and one that could make for a really cool Digimon... provided they didn't go the oversexualized/"female monsters must be cute and/or sexy before they can be monstrous" route. After the Xros Wars/Jintrix era, I'm a little worried what they might do with any lady youkai, but if done well it could be awesome. Hopefully more like Archnemon, Witchmon, or Eosmon than Junomon, Mervamon, or Belle Starrmon.
- Kaguya-hime
- Another of my favorite figures from Japanese folklore, and another one that could either be really cool or really gross, depending on what mentality the designer has. I'm imagining, like, a little alien princess lady in a bamboo spaceship and maybe some rabbit-themed details, since Japan loves their moon rabbits.
- Japanese macaque
- There is a dearth of ice-themed Digimon, especially annoying since Frontier established it as one of the ten basic elements of the Digital World. And I just love these cold monkeys; they have so much character in their flushed pink faces and their fur that makes them look like they're wearing fluffy parkas. I know we just recently got a monkey Digimon in Baboongamon, but I personally can never get enough primate Digimon. They're almost always a delight to me, whether they go the comedic route like Targetmon and Koemon, or the "cool" route like Hanumon and Gokuwmon.
- A beetle that isn't a rhinoceros or stag beetle (or both)
- Did you know that Coleoptera, the beetles, is the largest order in the animal kingdom, making up about 25% of all animal species? And yet, with the exception of Tentomon, Jewelbeemon, and maybe Searchmon, all beetle Digimon so far have been rhinoceros beetles and/or stag beetles? That's just pitiful, and yes, I know Japan loves their kabutomushi vs kuwagatamushi fights. But there's a whole gold mine of interesting and diverse beetle species out there that Bandai hasn't even dipped their toes into yet.
