Tampa Bay Lightning History

The Tampa Bay Lightning joined the league as an expansion team (along with the Ottawa Senators) in 1992, and earned their first berth in the Playoffs in the 1995-1996 season. The Bolts began to achieve consistent success in 2002-2003; the key ingredient was 1998 first-round draft pick Vincent Lecavalier, a center who went on to play 14 seasons for the Lightning and set almost every team scoring record.

After making the second round in the 2002-2003 Playoffs, the Bolts rocketed to the Stanley Cup Final the following season behind the league's scoring leader, Martin St. Louis, the goaltending of Nikolai Khabibulin, and the efforts of Lecavalier, Brad Richards, Fredrik Modin, Ruslan Fedotenko, Cory Stillman, and captain Dave Andreychuk. The Lightning defeated the Calgary Flames in a Stanley Cup Final that included four games decided by one goal, two of which came in overtime. Fedotenko scored both goals in the clinching 2-1 victory in Game 7.

The Lightning flirted with Playoff success the next two seasons, but struggled for three years after that. After bringing in Hall of Famer Steve Yzerman as general manager, the team returned to the Playoffs in 2010-2011, 2013-2014, and again the following season, when the Bolts — boasting the highest-scoring offense in the league — won 50 games, and the Eastern Conference title. They dispatched the Detroit Red Wings, Montreal Canadiens, and New York Rangers in a hard-fought series en route to the Stanley Cup Final, where they ultimately lost to the Chicago Blackhawks in six games.

Powered by the scoring of Nikita Kucherov and Steven Stamkos, the Lightning contended again in 2015-2016, only to be turned away in the conference finals by the eventual winner of the Stanley Cup Championship, the Pittsburgh Penguins. The Lightning subsequently went on to win back-to-back titles, taking home the Stanley Cup Championship in 2020 and 2021, becoming the first-ever team to win two Stanley Cup Championships within one year. The Lightning appeared in the championship again in 2022, but lost to the Colorado Avalanche in Game 6.

  • Great night with friends at Amalie!

by What a night!! on 12/8/24Amalie Arena - TampaRating: 5 out of 5

A few friends from work and I went to watch the Bolts play on December 5th 2024 and it was an awesome night. They had 90’s theme night and between the music and the graphics and everything else it was an incredible night and one to certainly remember. The Lightning did an amazing job and we had an absolute blast. The arena is awesome and I’ve always had a good time every single game I’ve gone to.

  • Amazing energy in the building

Everything about the experience was great. Parking right out front, great meal downtown at The Pearl, comfortable seats with leg room. No complaints.

  • It was our first time in person

by Sue on 12/5/24Amalie Arena - TampaRating: 5 out of 5

We loved every minute of going in person to the game. My husband had never even watched a game from home, so he was surprised at how much action there was and all the excitement even before the game started was so fun. I hope we can get tickets and come back again.

  • Terrible sight lines. Obstructions galore!

by Bob on 12/3/24Amalie Arena - TampaRating: 1 out of 5

The tickets I bought looked as though they had legroom which was the attraction for two long legged guys. However there were not one, but two railings and glass barriers between us and one net and half of the ice surface. And , because we were atop an entrance whenever fans moved about they too blocked our view. In a word, a disappointment. After the first period we moved , that’s how bad they were. We were from out of town and wanted to see our home team play the Lightning. I think Ticketmaster owes its clients fair warning when seats are obstructed, even partially so.

  • Great experience

First time going to the Tampa bay arena, and it was pretty great experience as a Leafs fan! Employee's were very informative on how to get to our seats, and told us all about the VIP Lounge and all the perks that came with our premium seats. Will definitely be back again!

  • Amazing

It was the first time with the boys! They had a fantastic experience and a great time. It was organized and clean, and the media was on top of the notch. I want to provide great feedback to the staff and telecommunication media group. Those people make the experience worth it. Thank you!

  • Great but at a price...

by DaveH on 11/26/24Amalie Arena - TampaRating: 4 out of 5

Hockey game was fun but Lightning didn't win. Enjoyed the experience of live hockey. Bottom line of the event is it is costly in the end.The cheaper 3rd level seats are not in good condition. Food and drinks are very expensive and then it's the parking. All the parking lots are priced too high even the ones 3 or more blocks away.

  • Atmosphere was awesome. I gad a great time
