Women and girls are vulnerable in conflicts all over the world and taking the lead in building peace.
Though women and girls face outsize risks from conflict, including from rape used as a weapon of war, they are often excluded from peacebuilding. Yet research has shown that women’s meaningful participation in peace negotiations results in agreements 35% more likely to last at least 15 years.
We fund our partners to provide services like humanitarian aid, counseling, shelter, health care and long-term support to help communities prevent, survive and recover from war.
We facilitate training, technical assistance and learning exchanges that equip women and girls to meaningfully participate as leaders in peace processes.
We advocate for women’s participation in peacebuilding. We work with our partners to bring their demands to key policy spaces and build leverage to hold governments and armed groups accountable for policy and social change.
MADRE works with Proceso de Comunidades Negras to advance women-led peacebuilding in Afro-Colombian communities. PCN ensured the protection of the rights of women and girls in the implementation of Colombia’s landmark peace agreement, signed in 2016 after decades of war.

YOUR SUPPORT IN ACTION
MADRE created a manual for women and human rights defenders on documenting gender-based violence and rights violations so they can find justice and end the cycle of violence in their communities. We also produced a guide on leaving Afghanistan safely for those in the country facing life-threatening risks under the Taliban regime.
