Ready for 2025? Gimme a beat! "There are years that ask questions and years that answer." Curiosity and clarity form the rhythm of daily life, according to these words from writer Zora Neale Hurston. As Head of Ragan's Communications Leadership Council, I love building this community where members can count on each other to nurture both questions and answers. We help peers steer through areas of rapid development and disruption for communicators. Gen AI. Change management. The business value of communications. Designing team structures. These are examples of the many issues that will inform our conversations and content in the coming year. Bring it on, 2025. The shocking murder of the CEO of UnitedHealthcare spotlights the need for a crisis communications plan for even the most unexpected events. During this week's member Think Tank call, we dove into a candid conversation around planning for the unimaginable and the importance of effective communications to support employees, communicate with stakeholders and dispel misinformation. It also led to a powerful conversation around protecting the privacy of public facing executives and employees — particularly when companies are looking to balance authenticity with safety. Members, continue these conversations on the portal forum and look for coverage and resources in the library.

Consider this our #SpotifyWrapped! At our recent leadership roundtable, communicators shared a song to describe the challenges and opportunities ahead in 2025. From Beyoncé and Taylor Swift to classics from The Beatles and Glenn Frey, it's an eclectic mix. The common thread: an iconic hook, lyric or vibe that captures the feelings of communicators as they prepare for the coming year. What would you add to the list?

We call them retreats, but instead we advance our business thinking when we gather in person. With a mix of healthy debate and exposition, communications leaders including Lauren Keane are rejecting stale, outmoded views — and asserting the business value of our comms outcomes and impacts.
Heading home inspired and energized after a fantastic retreat with Ragan's Communications Leadership Council! While my mind is still buzzing with ideas to bring back to the incredible comms team at SNHU, here are some of my top takeaways from the retreat: 1️⃣ Redefining Communications in the Value Chain Mary Buhay kicked things off with a powerful observation: communications has long been excluded from the traditional value chain taught in business schools. This leaves communications leaders often playing catchup with C-suites. To lead effectively, we must redefine where communications fits in organizations, advocating for our critical role in strategy and value creation. 2️⃣ Reframing Stress & Change Dr. Deborah Gilboa, MD reframed how we think about stress and change—a timely perspective for change-fatigued communications leaders! She explained that stress is a natural neurochemical response to change, occurring hundreds of times daily. Rather than labeling stress as "bad," she encouraged us to use it as a tool for growth. As communicators, we can harness this mindset shift to foster workplace cultures that embrace adaptability and innovation. 3️⃣ Executive Leaders as Storytellers (This isn’t a new concept, but it was reinvigorated by fresh insights from some of the best in the business.) Fredie Carmichael's case study during Hurricane Helene was a masterclass in storytelling. Georgia Power’s communicators matched the energy of their operational teams, crafting compelling narratives that resonated with millions at a time of crisis (and I loved the leadership lesson he shared about trusting and empowering one of their junior Gen Z employees to take the lead on social strategy - it paid off in big ways). Meghan Kidd and Ashley Brooks emphasized the importance of leader communications strategies, such as unified messaging and personalized executive channels, to connect meaningfully with employees. These sessions reaffirmed that storytelling is not just a skill—it’s a strategic leadership imperative. 4️⃣ Elevating Communications as a Strategic Business Function Jenna Reck's lessons and insights on transforming Thrivent’s communications team and processes into a strategic enterprise function showcased the power of integrated, executive-level communications. This shift doesn't just tell the story—it drives organizational success. This retreat underscored the growing influence of our roles in shaping the future of organizations. Plus, it always feels like an elite therapy session and a warm hug to be with so many other communications leaders navigating the same challenges but meeting the moment with offers to help, share ideas, and collaborate. Very thankful for this time to learn, grow, and connect! Excited to head back to Manchester and put these ideas into action! #Leadership #Storytelling #ChangeManagement #Communications #ProfessionalGrowth

We really quacked the code at the final session of the Member Retreat 🧠 Guided by Mary Olson - Menzel and Melissa Hook Shahbazian of MVP Spark Coaching, members were all given the same 6 toy bricks and just 3 minutes for the exercise: Build a duck. The results were proof positive that different minds bring different solutions to the table, and demonstrated that there is no one "right" formula for success. Divergent thinking is impactful!
