Training and physical preparation is only part of the athlete success equation—proper nutrition is just as vital. Director of Performance Nutrition for the Carolina Panthers Kate Callaway, shared with us strategies she’s implemented to help young athletes be more mindful of their nutrition. •Include general rules of thumb around training instead of getting caught up in a very specific plan or specific foods to eat. When trying to establish a routine, getting into the habit is laying the groundwork for it to be successful. Once you have the habit of fueling before practice, you can become more specific about food selections or macronutrients, etc. •Try new things on routine practice or training days, and not on competition day. Pack a snack and place it on top of your training gear so you have a visual reminder to fuel while you are dressing for training or competition. •Add a reminder in your calendar or to your alarms to fuel. Set it 30-60 minutes before training. •Get your teammates involved! Prioritize fueling together.
