  • Recently we had the pleasure of speaking with Claire Flynn Levy, the founder and CEO of Essentia Analytics. Claire's insights into behavioral finance and investment decision-making are truly eye-opening, and I wanted to highlight three key takeaways from our conversation that I believe will resonate with both seasoned investors and those just starting out. Understanding Behavioral Alpha: One of the most fascinating concepts we discussed is the Behavioral Alpha Score. This score quantifies an investor's decision-making skill by analyzing their investment processes. Claire explained that in today's market, generating sustainable alpha is more about making better decisions than simply having superior information. This score provides a structured way to measure and improve decision-making, which is crucial in a world where biases can cloud judgment. Predictive Power of Decision-Making: Claire shared findings from a recent study involving 123 unique long-only equity portfolios. The results showed that while past performance isn't predictive of future success, the Behavioral Alpha Score is! Specifically, managers with scores above 50 were 1.5 times more likely to outperform their benchmarks in the following year. This insight is invaluable for allocators and investors looking to assess which managers are more likely to succeed based on their decision-making skills rather than just historical performance. The Importance of Continuous Improvement: Throughout our discussion, Claire emphasized the need for fund managers to continuously analyze their decision-making processes. By breaking down investment episodes into specific decision types—like stock picking, sizing, entry and exit timing—managers can identify areas for improvement. This approach not only enhances their skills but also helps them adapt to changing market conditions, ultimately leading to better investment outcomes. I encourage you all to listen to this episode for a deeper dive into these topics and to gain practical insights that can enhance your investment strategies. Whether you're a professional investor or just curious about the world of finance, there's something valuable for everyone in this conversation! 🎧 Tune in now https://lnkd.in/guZTe_S9 #EnterprisingInvestor #BehavioralFinance #InvestmentStrategy #PodcastEpisode #CFAInstitute

  • Our latest episode of The Enterprising Investor, we had the privilege of speaking with Stephanie Baker, a senior writer at Bloomberg and the author of the compelling new book, "Punishing Putin: Inside the Global War to Bring Down Russia." In this episode, we dive deep into the unprecedented economic warfare against Russia following its invasion of Ukraine. Here are three key takeaways that stood out: The Anatomy of Sanctions: Stephanie sheds light on the complexities of sanctioning Russian oligarchs. Initially, the hope was that targeting these individuals would create pressure on Putin and potentially lead to regime change. However, the reality has been quite different. Many oligarchs have returned to Russia, becoming more dependent on Putin, which has inadvertently strengthened his grip on power. This highlights the challenges of using sanctions as a tool for political change and the need for a more nuanced approach. Seizing Assets and Legal Challenges: We explored the difficulties surrounding the seizure of Russian assets, particularly high-profile items like super yachts. The case of the Amadea yacht illustrates the intricate web of ownership and the legal hurdles that arise when trying to enforce sanctions. The U.S. has been at the forefront of this economic warfare, but the lack of a well-developed sanctions regime in Europe has made it challenging to coordinate efforts effectively. This episode emphasizes the importance of legal frameworks in executing economic sanctions. Impact on the Russian Economy: Stephanie discusses how the sanctions have forced Russia to adapt, putting its economy on a war footing. While there has been some economic growth due to increased military spending, inflation is rising, and labor shortages are becoming a significant issue. The long-term effects of these sanctions are still unfolding, but they are clearly having an impact on Russia's ability to sustain its military efforts. This episode is a must-listen. 🎧 Tune in now: https://lnkd.in/eDHVbdVA #Podcast #Investing #Economics #Sanctions #Geopolitics #CFAInstitute #StephanieBaker #PunishingPutin
