Last week, Amex Ventures had a strong presence at AFROTECH. A big thank you to Ope Runsewe, Shilla Kim-Parker, and Luke Bailey for their panel discussion on how founders can best prepare for partnering with large enterprises. Their insights were valuable to all attendees. Also, thank you to all the founders and investors who attended our Early-Stage Founders & Funders Breakfast. It’s always a pleasure to partner with Forum Ventures and Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati and connect with inspiring founders and operators. We are grateful for all the connections we made and look forward to being back at the conference next year.
Last week, I flew down to Houston to join Shilla Kim-Parker and Luke Bailey on stage at the Founders & Funders session - thank you AFROTECH for another great year! Shila hosted a fantastic discussion, and Luke shared his founder wisdom as always. A few key insights I shared with our audience from across the startup ecosystem: - Know Your North Star: Focus on how your product or service creates a game-changing, complementary partnership for a corporate. - Visionary Leadership: Articulate a clear vision and use it to build an “A-team” to deliver on it. This gave me the perfect opportunity to draw parallels from football and Sir Alex Ferguson’s ability to lead championship-winning teams year after year (a time fellow Man Utd fans wish we could go back to🙏🏿😂) - Relationships and Networks matter: Find investors and communities who offer opportunities for you, and when they arise, don’t just stand at the door - push it open and deliver on your vision. I’ve tagged some of VCs and groups in the comments section we mentioned in the session. Thank you to the many American Express colleagues that made this happen (Jacob, Aziza, Maddy, Jennifer, Bianca, Rochelle & Caisey) and were able to join us and to Forum Ventures (🙏🏿Nia) & Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati for being incredible partners for our breakfast event.

Congrats to Finix, an Amex Ventures portfolio company on their Series C funding announcement. The company enables businesses to accept and send payments online and in-store. Finix will use the funding to continue its efforts to broaden its product offering, expand into new regions, and increase its innovation in the payments space. See more below:
Today Finix is excited to announce we’ve raised $75M in Series C funding led by Acrew Capital and co-led by Leap Global Partners and Lightspeed. When we started Finix, we were big believers in the developer movement. We still are! Since then, we’ve recognized that there’s been a major shift in the market. Even businesses that have developers don’t want to spend their time or resources on payments — they want highly brandable and configurable payment components. From startups to publicly traded companies, merchants to vertical SaaS companies, customers of all sizes are taking advantage of Finix’s no-code solutions. Today, every feature in Finix's broad product suite is now available in no-code, low-code, and API-driven solutions. If Adyen is for the enterprise, Square is for card present SMBs, Stripe is for the developer-centric startup, Finix is for the 22M businesses without enough developers.
