Not your typical business course

CSUSM, CoBA Marketing 446 Fall, 2018 Class experience:

Miguel de Jesús puts a spin on the typical college-level business course. As professor

de Jesús has over 40 years of experience in the industry of coaching and managing

top-level sales teams, you can expect the same type of mentorship in the classroom.

Professor de Jesús gives students a real-world experience that is far different from

other classes that may be taken at the university. Each class begins at the time

posted on the syllabus, meaning if the class is posted to start at 4 pm and you arrive

at 4:05 pm you are late. The concept of discipline and accountability is often ignored

in many of the classes at the university, you will learn that arriving five minutes early

is an essential skill for success in the professional world. 

 Professor de Jesús designs his classroom like an open discussion meeting rather than

a lecture. The subject of the day may be, “quotas”. The lecture may begin with one

of Miguel’s personal stories from the field, but will soon turn to the class as

colleagues begin commenting and telling their own stories and experiences about

the subject. As many of the students work in similar industries ideas and debates

bounce around the classroom bringing in more engagement than the average

lecture.

 Professor Miguel allows the students to see success first hand as he invites top-level

guest speakers to come in and talk about their successes and recommendations. I

have only had one other course that gave students the opportunity to speak and

network at this level. Professor de Jesús also gives and recommends students books

to read in order to be successful in their desired field. I have seen very few

Professors actively try to give students necessary outside recourses for their success. 

As members of the class participate, they are often questioned about their current

mindset and current way of thinking. Professor de Jesús teaches you the power of

yourself, he explains that you should never settle, and to always have the bar set

high if not higher. Professor de Jesús is the only professor on campus who doesn’t

doubt or question a student if they say they want to be a Millionaire. Professor de

Jesús shows his students that excellence is the standard and anything short of that, is

to short one’s self. 

Out of all the classes taken at this university, Professor Miguel de Jesus’s is one of

the most influential courses I have had the pleasure to take. As Professor de Jesús

always says, “Struggle is Optional …. Success is a Choice”.
