  1. Flexibility and freedom You as a Contractor have the ability to choose what you want to do! You have the freedom to select projects and clients that align with your skills and interests. This flexibility can also extend to working hours and locations!

  2. Higher earning potential As a Contractor you can often earn more per hour than someone in a permanent role. This can be particularly beneficial for you if you have a niche or in-demand skills.

  3. Build your portfolio By working on multiple projects across various industries, you can quickly develop a versatile portfolio, build on your skill set which can then make you more attractive to future employers.

  4. Networking opportunities By working in different environments, you as a Contractor can build your network within the industry and open yourself up to mor opportunities.

What are the disadvantages of Contract Roles? 👎🏼

  1. Job security Contracts vary in length and end once the project or agreement comes to an end, there is always an opportunity for contract extension if the project over runs, but usually the project will last for a set amount of time. This could potentially mean periods of unemployment and always on the hunt for a new opportunity.

  2. Lack of benefits Health insurance, paid time off, pension and other perks are typically not provided in contract roles, which need to be something to be considered.

  3. Financial admin When contracting you will need to manage your own taxes, invoicing and business expenses. This can be a confusing if you haven't dealt with this before, but you could consider hiring an Accountant to help you with this.


What Are Permanent Roles?

Permanent roles provide long-term employment with a company, and these come with a benefits package a set salary and opportunities for progression including a comprehensive benefits package and opportunities for career progression. If you are looking for stability and to climb the career ladder this could be the option for you! Lets look at some of the advantages and disadvantages to a permanent role.

What are the advantages of Permanent Roles? 👍🏼

  1. Job stability A permanent role guarantees a steady income, and stability for the long term

  2. Employee benefits In a permanent job your role will come with a benefits package that you wouldn't typically get in a contract role. Such as health insurance, pension plan, paid leave, and professional development opportunities, which enhance the total value of the role.

  3. Career growth opportunities Working for one company permanently allows you to gain insight and knowledge, build on your key skills and be exposed to progression opportunities where you can climb the career ladder.

What are the disadvantages of Permanent Roles? 👎🏼

  1. Limited variety If you are someone who likes variety and change a permanent role may not be for you. Working in the same environment in the same role can get monotonous for some especially if you don't feel challenged.

  2. Slower earnings growth While permanent employees often enjoy raises and bonuses, their hourly rates tend to be lower compared to contractors, particularly for specialized skills.

  3. Less flexibility Permanent roles typically require set hours and specific work locations that may not suit everyone.

  • Highly Skilled Specialists: If you are a Contractor with with in-demand skills you will more than likely be able to command higher rates.

  • Flexible working People who value a flexible work life or the ability to take extended breaks between projects.


Who should consider permanent roles?

Permanent roles are a great fit for:

  • Career-oriented professionals: If stability, peace of mind and career progression is important to you a permanent route maybe the best route to choose.

  • Family-focused workers: Often having a family comes with more financial burden, working in a permanent role will allow you to have steady income and benefits package to help with this.

  • New graduates: If you are new to the industry working in a permanent role can help you establish yourself in the industry whilst getting excellent training to build your career.
