Using Visualization as a Mindful Mind Hack to Maximize Your Brain power

Have you heard of visualization?

Many people, maybe you’re one of them, were first introduced to visualization by a sports coach, to help motivate the team perform at a higher level. Visualizing has been used as a personal development tool by celebrities like Arnold Schwarzenegger, Oprah Winfrey as well as many other not so well known but highly successful people.

But did you know that there’s a scientific basis for how visualization works? Over the past 20 years or so, neuroscientists have found that visualization actually changes the brain and can set you on the road to success.

Rewiring Your Brain

Your brain prioritizes what you need to know. There is a powerful part of your brain, called the The Reticular Activating System (RAS), that protects your brain from being overwhelmed.

Your brain, like all human brains, can process about 11 million bits of data every second. This results in a flood of information. If your conscious brain had to deal with all this information, you would be in a constant state of overwhelm.

Here’s an example, since you’ve sat down to read this, you probably haven’t thought about the feeling of the shoes on your feet, or the lack of them, have you? You probably haven’t thought about how soft or scratchy your shirt or blouse is, right?

The reason you don’t become overwhelmed by all this data is because your RAS filters out the data that you don’t want or need at this moment in time. It acts in the same manner an email filter works, discarding what you don’t need to know and prioritizing the important things.

Your RAS is influenced both by your childhood messages and what you ‘tell’ it that you want to know. Here’s a great example. Have you ever noticed how, once you decide you want a new car, you see that model of car everywhere? That’s your RAS saying ‘look at this’!

This is where visualization can make a difference. You can use it to hack your mind by refocusing your thoughts from negative doubts that distract you from going after your dreams, to creating a clear positive vision of who and where you want to be.

You can use visualization to hack your RAS to overcome the anxiety that can come with trying new things or just in day to day life. Visualization does this by creating an alternative reality that primes your mind for success. By keeping your goals literally top of mind you focus it on achieving them.

Harness Your Brain Chemistry

Your brain is a chemical creating factory that produces a complex system of hormones and other chemicals. With a little practice, you can manipulate processes like your dopamine feedback loops in a way that focuses your subconscious mind on successful behaviors.

That good feeling when you win is all about the rush of dopamine that floods your brain as a kind of chemical reward. This chemical reward is what keeps you motivated to try and achieve bigger and better goals.

One way you can harness this dopamine reward system is by using stretch goals. For example, if you’re in sales, you set your goal to get two new clients this week, three the next, and so on. What you’re doing is feeding and encouraging your motivation by priming your dopamine loops. Even better, it makes the work more fun!

Use Your Memories

Another scientific discovery is you can edit your memories in a way that focuses your mind on the good ones, instead of remembering and ruminating on past bad experiences. Remembering past successes lifts your feelings of confidence and boosts your motivation.

Another way to use visualization to the sting out of bad memories is to play them over and over in your mind and then visualizing them getting smaller and smaller until they completely disappear.

You can also use memories by turning up the color and volume on good memories. Make them IMAX sized in your mind and enjoy how they make you feel. Use that vision to fuel your motivation.
