Time Waits for No-One!

Welcome to the forty-first edition of "In-Touch". As always, I would love to continue the conversation so please hit "reply" and let me know what you think.

Story of the Week: Time Waits for No-One!

Two days ago, I was online and about to book my flight for an upcoming trip, when I received a phone call. After chatting for some time, I began doing some other work and, in the end, I decided to leave the air ticket until the next day. The following morning, I continued from where I had left the booking process and – lo and behold – I ended up paying 65% more for the exact same booking. (Apparently it has to do with a process known as ‘dynamic pricing’, which basically means that as demand increases, prices go up).

This incident obviously caused a loss of money and pain at the same time. The moral here is two-fold: When you put something off, chances are that you are going to end up paying for it (sometimes literally, as in the case of my air ticket), and perhaps just as important, when you over-think a situation that requires an instant decision, you are merely procrastinating, even if you don’t mean to be.

If you regularly catch yourself thinking, “I’ll finish that soon” or “I can definitely make up time for that later on” or something in a similar vein, I suggest you turn to one of the following two books by globally known motivational speakers:

  1. Eat That Frog! 21 Great Ways to Stop Procrastinating and Get More Done in Less Time” by Brian Tracy is a great place to begin. “Done, not perfect” and “smarter, not harder” are my go-to mantras from this book. Eat That Frog! is all about overcoming procrastination and learning to manage your time. When you learn to “eat your frogs” – meaning do your most important tasks first – you’ll work more efficiently and be happier too.
  2. The 5 Second Rule” by Mel Robbins is about an extremely powerful rule to prevent you from procrastinating. It works like this: whenever you have an impulse to act on a goal, you must do so within 5 seconds, otherwise your brain will kill the idea and you will start to procrastinate. So, the next time you want to get started on something, count down in your head: 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 and go.

So, if you find yourself putting things off “until tomorrow”, tell yourself that you need to act now. It will not only keep you alert and active but may also save you a lot of money. And when you think, “I should read one of those books that Michael Virardi recommended”, go online or call your local bookshop now!

Words of Wisdom

Lack of procrastination is your pathway to success:

“Begin while others are procrastinating. Work while others are wishing.”

William Arthur Ward / American motivational writer

A Question to Ponder, dear friend.

“Can you remember an instance when your procrastination proved costly?”

Interesting topic, Michael. I recently came across a surprising TEDx talk by Adam Grant which challenges the common belief and links moderate procrastination with creativity boost. https://youtu.be/fxbCHn6gE3U
