The Power of Giving: Lessons from Super Connectors and the Richest Man in Babylon
Last year, my life transformed in ways I never imagined. It feels like Christmas comes early every day, and I owe it all to an extraordinary journey that began with a chance encounter in Croatia last summer.
I had just started to share our technology, OptiMatch, with the world when I met Charles Byrd, a man who would change my perspective forever at a Baby Bathwater event. At the time, the concept of a “super-connector” was completely foreign to me. Little did I know, I was about to enter a world where connections are the currency of transformation.
Charles introduced me to the idea of a “referral party.” Imagine this: you hop on a call with someone and ask, “What are you up to, and how can I help?” You listen deeply, employing your “spidey sense” to discover how you can add value to their life. It’s not about what you can get but what you can give. It’s a space where generosity and authenticity shine.
Through Charles and this practice, I began meeting some of the most incredible super connectors in the world—people like Randy Molland 🫶🏻 , Justin Breen , Brandon Fong , Jem Fuller Weston Woodward, Karen Corban , Jackie Woodside, CPC, MSW , Johann Nogueira Brice Penaud Reef Colman , and so many others. Each introduction felt like unwrapping a gift, and before I knew it, my calendar was overflowing with 12 to 15 meetings a day, both virtual and in person. But here’s the thing: it wasn’t exhausting. It was exhilarating. Each meeting became an opportunity to create value, to give, and to grow.
Recently, a friend staying at my house asked me, “How do you manage to have a full calendar every single day?” I paused, and the answer came effortlessly: “It’s because I give so many referrals that I receive so many referrals.” The secret, I realized, was simple—be of service.
This concept isn’t new. In Kabbalah, they speak of two types of desires: the desire to receive for the self alone and the desire to receive for the sake of sharing. The latter creates magic—not just in our lives but in the lives of others. When we shift our focus from “What can I get?” to “What can I give?” we unlock a flow of abundance that is both practical and spiritual.
Right now, our world often feels dominated by the desire to receive for the self alone. But what if we all chose to approach our interactions differently? What if, on your next call or in your next meeting, you asked, “How can I be of service today?” By simply listening and offering value, we could create a ripple effect of collaboration and generosity.
This reminds me of a story from the book The Richest Man in Babylon. In it, a poor man asks the wealthiest man in the city for his secrets. The richest man doesn’t hoard his wisdom; he shares it freely because he understands that true wealth lies in helping others grow. While the book teaches about financial wealth, its deeper wisdom is about the untapped resources we have in our connections and the value of sharing what we know.
So here’s my invitation to you: the next time you’re in a meeting or on a call, channel the spirit of a super connector or the richest man in Babylon. Seek to give, to serve, and to share. You might just find that the more you give, the richer your life becomes—in relationships, opportunities, and joy.
Let’s create a future where collaboration is the norm and abundance flows freely for everyone. Who’s with me?
