So, grab your mug, settle in, and let’s dig into the trends and transformations defining our work days!
By the Numbers: Office Security
25% of organizations observed an uptick in physical security incidents last year, consistent with the 28% in 2022 and 2021, a noticeable rise from 20% in 2020.
40% of Chief Security Officers in the UK are planning significant budget increases in the next year to bolster security measures.
32% of businesses reported project delays as a direct fallout from security incidents, and 30% suffered damage to their access control assets.
Wayleadr has reported that clients are using a range of different technologies such as RFID and License Plate Recognition to ensure more secure and personalized access control.
Return To Office
Back in the High Life Again 🏢
Delving into the shifts and shuffles in office leasing.
Office space demand in New York City and Los Angeles has hit the highest levels since August 2021, with a consistent growth trend over the last nine months.
Despite this, Manhattan construction activity shrunk to a modest 3 million square feet in 2024. However, on the opposite coast, Seattle claims two projects exceeding 1 million square feet in the top 20 largest office deliveries expected in 2024.
U.S. office sales dipped to $5.4 billion in Q1 2024, marking a 17% decrease from the previous year, with properties trading at an average of $171 per square foot
Employee Satisfaction
Something’s Gotta Give ⚔️
Executives and employees are facing a widening gap in perception according to the 2023 Global Re:work Report from Kelly Services.
28% of employees feel poised to leave due to unmet expectations on work-life balance and career progression opportunities.
38% of executives believe that uncompetitive pay and benefits are the top reasons for employee turnover.
42% of executives admit they're failing to unlock their employees' full potential, potentially jeopardizing long-term business goals.
Commuting
Drive My Car 👥
Some commuters are going to extreme lengths to dodge rush-hour traffic.
A California driver was recently fined after trying to outsmart traffic using a mannequin to qualify for the carpool lane.
Dressed in a hoodie and sunglasses, and sporting a suspiciously sharp goatee, this plastic companion was meant to be a shortcut through the morning rush.
The scheme unravelled when the motorist was pulled over for crossing solid double lines, a move that drew the attention of the Highway Patrol to his inanimate passenger.
The Santa Fe Springs Police playfully noted on social media that a mannequin might dress the part but doesn’t fill the seat. Next time, bring a buddy who can actually enjoy the ride.
Workplace Surveillance
Somebody's Watching Me 👀
Does the new reality of workplace surveillance mean always being watched?
57% of employers requiring a return to the office now use monitoring systems to track office attendance, igniting a heated debate over workplace privacy and trust.
Earlier this year it emerged that EY in the UK has begun using anonymized turnstile data to monitor staff attendance and ensure compliance with its hybrid working policies.
Experts continue to caution against equating physical presence with productivity, advocating for a focus on actual work outcomes rather than just time spent at the desk.
