A Modest Proposal: Housing Solution for Teachers in San Francisco

I write to offer a modest proposal that addresses the pressing issue of housing for teachers in our beloved city. It is a proposal that not only provides immediate relief to educators but also rectifies a scandalous situation. With a simple course of action, we can transform 55 Oak Street into move-in-ready homes for over 100 teachers, ensuring they can settle in before the upcoming fall school year.

Originally constructed as 109 new condo homes, 55 Oak Street was part of a development project by Z&L Properties, owned by the billionaire Li Zheng. This development, along with 555 Fulton and 588 Minna, is now marred by the illegal actions of its owner. Li Zheng is currently under house arrest in the UK and faces extradition to San Francisco for alleged bribery of government officials to obtain building permits. Mohammed Nuru, associated with the project, is already serving a seven-year prison sentence for his involvement in related crimes.

My humble suggestion is for the city to exercise its powers of eminent domain, relieving Z&L Properties and Li Zheng of an asset that has remained vacant for years. By doing so, the city can then gift the SFUSD with a fully-equipped, 109-unit building ready for teachers and their families to rent at rates that align with their salaries. This compassionate act not only provides homes for 109 teachers but also serves as a meaningful restitution to the citizens of San Francisco for the alleged crimes committed by Li Zheng.

The architectural design of 55 Oak/1554 Market, crafted by Handel architects, showcases two interconnected buildings, each facing Market Street and Oak Street, with a charming central courtyard. The building boasts amenities such as two rooftop decks, a fitness center, bike storage, and on-site parking for some units. Perhaps these first-rate luxury finishes can be seen as a sincere appreciation for the hardworking teachers who shape the future of our city.

These stunning homes have languished in vacancy for far too long, but it doesn't have to remain that way. With decisive action, the city can send a clear message to present and future developers contemplating similar misconduct with our permitting and entitlement process. Furthermore, the city can take a significant step forward in providing affordable housing for our teachers. By activating this mid-market block, we invigorate a neighborhood that is in dire need of vibrant communities.
