Like Molasses

Why such a long haul to get business to consider social responsibility, a triple bottom line, and impact beyond dollar signs? Finally it feels like there is some traction, yet only because of the great disruption in traditional business, and dare I say, politics.

Recent considerations: the http://pledge1percent.org/ initiative, meeting with conscious capitalists, discovering the Conscious Company Magazine, listening to the nation's education leaders, even a few political candidates challenging us all to push beyond the typical and embrace a transformative way of doing what we do. Now we talk more regularly about the purpose driven economy.

It's exciting and hopeful.

To move beyond those typically in power, who have for so long progressed at the speed of molasses, the work is being done around the edges, in start up communities, in co-working spaces, in living rooms and coffee spots. It's being done by young and old. Middle aged too. Everyone believing "we can do better than this," "there has to be a better way."

This requires us to check in to our values, our purpose, and push ahead despite the roadblocks and "old school" entrenched thinking. And yes, it does requires us to take our creative ideas and sometimes pour them into traditional buckets or framings just to get those stuck in the past to "get it" and embrace the idea to move forward.

Presidential politics has broken all kinds of boundaries. It will be interesting to see how much of it sticks and reframes our future.

Whether business or politics, it's exciting to see those getting "unstuck" from the molasses drip and breaking through to creating meaningful solutions to the challenges we face. I, for one, am pushing through. Fingers crossed, head down and hard work, and together with "community", we will be able to show a better way.
