Like it or not, AI is Redefining Communication and Growth

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is no longer a distant concept—it’s here, evolving rapidly and shaping how we communicate, connect, and navigate our professional and personal lives.

AI, especially Generative AI, is already part of our daily routines, whether we like it or not. Ignoring it is not the way forward. Any professional who wants to remain relevant in this fast-paced AI Age must embrace it and develop digital literacy.

This is why Cormac Walsh, DTM and I created the Digital Dialogues LIVE calls—a platform to discuss, question, share, learn, and expand our understanding of AI technology.

Over the past Digital Dialogues sessions, Cormac Walsh and I have delved deep into the transformative impact of AI. Here are some key insights and reflections from our recent conversations.

1. AI as a Digital Companion: Revolutionising Communication

In our second live session of Digital Dialogues, we analysed Mustafa Suleyman’s TED videoWhat is an AI Anyway?. Mustafa's metaphor of AI as a “new digital species” resonated deeply with us. This perspective invites us to see AI not just as a tool, but as a transformative force capable of reshaping industries and interactions.

“AI should amplify humanity, not replace it,” Mustafa emphasised.

From diagnosing diseases to generating creative content, AI is redefining what’s possible. Yet, this transformation comes with the responsibility to ensure that AI serves humanity’s best interests. As we explored, understanding AI as a “digital companion” can help us manage its potential consequences effectively.

2. The Balance Between Risks and Opportunities

Our discussions highlighted the dual nature of AI: immense potential paired with significant risks. Christina K. P. Kwok , a participant in the call, referenced unintended consequences, such as algorithm-driven harm on social platforms, which served as a stark reminder of the ethical implications of AI autonomy.

It became clear to us that the real challenge lies in regulating AI without stifling innovation. Digital literacy must bridge the gap between creators, users, and regulators, ensuring technology reflects our shared values rather than amplifying biases or harm.

3. Generative AI: Enhancing Human Skills

We had the privilege of hosting a private session with Olivier Plante , founder of Fleksy, an innovative enterprise that revolutionised text input technology and became the go-to keyboard SDK for developers worldwide.

Olivier brought a fresh perspective on how generative AI, like ChatGPT, can support professionals. From refining communication skills to aiding decision-making, AI tools hold tremendous promise—but they cannot replace human dialogue.

“Generative AI can help people get back to their humanity by improving their communication skills,” I shared during our talk.

This sentiment underscores a broader truth: as AI continues to grow, so must our ability to engage authentically, navigating conversations with empathy and understanding.

4. The Future of Digital Twins and Content Verification

Oliver introduced us to the Digital twins—AI-driven models that replicate human behaviours—which are already impacting industries like healthcare and social media. However, as Olivier pointed out, distinguishing between AI-generated and human-created content is critical for trust.

For younger generations, the origin of content may seem secondary to its quality, but as professionals, we must ensure AI promotes transparency and accountability in the digital ecosystem.

5. Adapting to AI’s Impact on Industries

As AI disrupts traditional industries, from translation to content creation, professionals must stay ahead by adapting and upskilling. Standardisation may bring efficiency, but individuality must not be sacrificed in a sea of AI-generated outputs.

A BIG Shout Out! 📣 📣 📣

The ability to integrate AI while retaining a unique human touch will be the key to professional relevance in the AI era.

Looking Ahead: Harnessing AI Responsibly

AI is not an end—it’s a means to amplify what makes us human: creativity, connection, and critical thinking. As we continue to explore AI’s potential and challenges, one thing is clear: dialogue is essential. Through discussions like these, we aim to promote understanding and equip professionals to navigate this rapidly changing landscape.

These conversations, even though we have only just begun, have become increasingly fascinating for me Tulia Lopes because they force us to ask questions of ourselves far beyond simple definitions of whether AI is a “tool” or an “agent”. We are being asked to reevaluate our idea of what the world is, and will be, as we dive headlong into life alongside generative AI. Learning from wonderful friends and colleagues like Olivier Plante is exciting but also challenging as we navigate what all of this will mean for us and in particular for communication, a world that has inspired Tulia and I for many years
