Ignite Your Leadership Journey

Leadership and Growth – Year in Review, Reflecting on Leadership Growth and Creating Actionable Plans in Leadership and Why it Matters?

Have you ever wondered why Year in Review, Reflecting on Leadership Growth, and Creating Actionable Plans in Leadership Matter?

How would you know what actual growth in leadership at the end of the year looks like? Is it measured in the teams' achievements, the milestones we’ve reached, or the lessons learned along the way? Reflection, by definition, is not just about assessing the success but transformation, assessing how leaders became who they are today and what they might do to amplify their impact in the year ahead. Consider a nonprofit executive who started the year short on capital and finished with a startup well-resourced to scale due to leveraged game-changing partnerships. It was not merely growth in numbers but a rise in thinking and strategy to convert barriers into opportunities. Such introspection and future-oriented action is the hallmark of leadership.

Importance - Reflection in leadership is like a compass that helps us evaluate where we stand, strategize how to move forward and plot the course for sustainable growth. Today, the world is filled with such fast-changing landscapes and uncertainties that reflection and adaptation are essential. According to a 2023 Deloitte study, reflection is one of the core practices top leaders use. Reflection allows high performers to connect their past experiences and future goals. Taking time here boosts self-awareness and provides a more discerning decision-making process that can lead to actions that resonate with personal values and the organization's vision.

Impact - Considering what has been done and learned over the years provides excellent value for individuals, teams, and organizations. Leaders who practice this become more aware of their strengths and opportunities for development, which encourages continuous learning throughout their careers. They also learn the importance of acknowledging and appreciating team efforts, embedding a culture of appreciation and teamwork. This reflection helps leaders adapt the corporate strategy and objectives to suit changing market conditions and keep abreast with organizational transformation. Take, for example, a global retailer dealing with supply chain disruptions. The leadership team reflected on the last year's challenges and recognized where they had fallen short. This led them to adopt agile methodologies, bringing operational efficiency to the forefront and enhanced robustness against such hampering events.

Challenges - Although reflection is an invaluable gift, it presents its challenges. The biggest challenge may be the lack of time since other priorities are much more pressing than reflection. Second, we may tend to obsess over results rather than the behaviors that led to those results. Such an approach might even hamper the ability to discover actions that can be taken and lead to reflection, leading to missed growth opportunities. To counteract these issues, we can institutionalize reflection practices. Environmental enablement structures like journaling, feedback loops, and facilitated team discussions can generate healthy spaces for thoughtful insights and intelligent actions.

Board Room - Leadership reflection is a strategic imperative for boardrooms. Board members can promote a culture of reflection among leaders by encouraging them to share their experiences openly and collectively. Boards that create a culture of reflection enable leaders to be innovative, adaptive, and aligned in mission. Another benefit of this practice is its role in enhancing governance: leadership decisions are guided by knowledge of how the organization has done and what it aims for in the future.

Global Perspectives - Internationally, reflection on leadership experiences may differ. The Japanese have a culture of application called hansei, which means reflection—the act essential for sustainable progress. Larger-than-life leaders are prompted to admit their weaknesses and pledge to grow daily publicly. In the Western sense, reflection is often data-driven and based on numbers and results. By combining these perspectives, leaders can balance introspection and actionable planning, paving the way for holistic growth.

Expert Opinions—Brené Brown, a leadership expert, reminds us that reflection begins with vulnerability: “Leadership is not about being in charge. It's about being responsible for the people that you lead.” In this mindset, leaders see reflection as a means to relate authentically and grow. As John C. Maxwell says, “Experience is not the best teacher—evaluated experience is." This point of view sharpens to show that experience becomes insight when it is reflected upon, which drives conscious action.

Future Outlooks—Contemplation will be crucial as organizations transition to an offering world. Once again, identifying how to stay ahead of the curve with emerging trends like hybrid work models, digital transformation, and social responsibility in business calls for leaders who can adapt to a constantly evolving landscape. Leaders with future lenses will focus on creating reflective organizational cultures, leading to adaptability, resilience, and alignment with long-game strategies.

Three Takeaways for our Boardrooms:

Takeaway #1: Prioritize Reflection – We must encourage leaders to integrate reflection into their routines, ensuring alignment between actions and strategic goals.

Takeaway #2: Foster Collaboration - We must support transparent discussions of lessons learned, which will create opportunities for collective growth.

Takeaway #3: Champion Continuous Improvement – We must advocate for practices that transform reflection into actionable strategies for sustained success.

Final Reflection - As we close out this year — and perhaps take a breath and reflect on our leadership journey — let us recognize the gift of taking a moment to look to move forward with intention. The Year in Review isn’t merely a retrospective exercise; it’s a celebration of resilience, creativity, and progress.

Looking back on our growth as a leader isn’t just about reframing where we’ve been successful; it’s also about identifying where we’ve struggled and how those challenges have changed us. And actionable plans aren’t just making plans; they are making meaningful plans that are consistent with our values, vision, and aspirations.

Leadership is not a label or static state but a journey. It’s about growing through each experience, having clarity, and the courage to step forward with my head held high and lead into what’s next. So, I’ll leave you with this question:

How, as a leader, will you enable your reflections to create momentum and your plans to deliver impact?

Let’s use the lessons we’ve learned, the growth we’ve made, and the dreams we’ve had to help guide us into the future. Leadership that involves intentional reflection and purposeful action is the right way to ripple beyond ourselves—to influence, empower, and inspire others to create a transformative effect in the world around us.

Let’s lead boldly, learn relentlessly, and make 2025 the year of transformational leadership. That is why year in review, reflecting on leadership growth, and creating actionable plans matter.
