How to Filter Out Worthless Ebook Ideas—Part 2

How to Filter Out Worthless Ebook Ideas—Part 2

Are you spending your precious time, money, and mental energy on the right ebook topics? In this series, we’ll explore quick ways to test your ideas.

Coming up with a relevant topic isn’t an exact science. But there are steps you can take today to help maximize the probability that your next ebook will move the needle and impact revenue.

Today we’ll look at the ICP test—choosing a topic based on a clear understanding of your ideal customers’ needs.

The ICP Test

Do you really know what matters to your ideal customers? Or are you just guessing?

Creating a great ebook begins with a clear ideal customer profile. Without an ICP, how would you even judge the relevance of any specific topic?

Ask yourself:

  • Who exactly are we trying to influence?
  • What are their roles and responsibilities?
  • What business challenges are most closely related to our product/solution? It doesn’t have to “keep them up at night.” But it does have to be a priority.
  • What level of expertise do they already have about these problems? Are they subject matter experts who would value deeper insights into an obscure topic? Or are they novices who need to first understand the big picture?

A generic ICP = a generic ebook. Broad target audience descriptions like “marketing decision-makers” and “C-level executives” tell you nothing about who these people are and what matters to them.
