From Crisis to Inc. Best Workplaces in America

Inc Magazine selects Susco as one of the 543 Best Workplaces in the USA.

Discover how we transformed our culture—from losing 30% of new hires within two years to achieving high retention while selectively hiring the top 0.1% of applicants. This shift not only drove exceptional outcomes for our clients but also earned us a spot on the Inc. 5000 Fastest Growing Companies List for five consecutive years. Plus, we’re proud to be the only small business in Louisiana recognized on Inc Magazine's Best Workplaces in America 2024 list.

In August of 2016, on the eve of my 39th birthday, I realized I was in crisis. I was 120 pounds overweight, my wife wasn’t happy, and I was working 70 hours a week, but Susco wasn’t thriving. I realized to fix my problems, I had to work on my inner (mental) game, which I did. I found my purpose, discovered how to meet my needs in positive ways, addressed my limited beliefs, and learned how to manage change.

By 2019, both my personal life and work were thriving. My health was on track, we had more than doubled our revenue, and even added "Growth [Mindset]" as a core value. During one leadership meeting, we talked about deploying some of the tools that had helped me personally and explored how we could support our team’s well-being and fulfillment beyond work. We all agreed it was important—but decided we’d get to it when we had the time.

A year passes, not much forward momentum on this plan. Then,

COVID strikes. We go remote. Through a lot of hard work and some amazing luck, we had a massive growth spurt. 3 of the 10 people we hired quit within 1 month of each other — all said they loved the company but had some personal reason why they were suffering and needed to move on. Multiple other employees reported near depression being in lockdown.

At this point, our HR Manager and "Susco Mom", Jessica Guillot, said “Okay, we HAVE to make time for this,” and finally pushed us into action. We started doing employee check-ins monthly — not performance reviews where we tell them how they are performing — but where we would ask them questions about their satisfaction with life and work. When we found patterns of issues that were the company’s fault, we changed our processes to address them. We helped people develop Individual Development Plans (IDPs), not only for their long-term career vision and short-term career goals, but also their vision and goals for their health, family, friendships, finances, fun, & community impact.

We decided the world needs a new view of the employee / employer relationship. A new social contract where both parties give more and thrive because of it. A compassionate meritocracy where we help each other grow up together — because when we’re all allowed the space to grow and develop personally and professionally, we can contribute to a better society at large.

Things were going great, and then in 2023, it dawned on me - we HAVE to do this. I was looking at the data and even though material wealth for all Americans between 1980 and 2020 skyrocketed, mental health has taken a nosedive.  Americans are richer but more obese, depressed, anxious, and living without meaning or a belief in the American Dream (more stats here).

Either 21st century employers have to lower the bar for achievement to placate the new normal, or we have to build people up to help them reach their potential. I believe we can do this.

Some of my cynical friends told me that I was crazy. That this wasn’t a good investment of time. That people wouldn’t open up.

Well, I think it’s fair to say we’ve proved them wrong. We hire the top 0.1% of candidates that apply, and we have great retention. Because our staff is amazingly talented and 100% engaged, our clients get better custom software faster than any of their other vendors can provide. To boot, we’re profitable enough to give back to the community and self-fund our new software-as-a-service, RocketClaims.

So am I surprised that Inc. rated Susco as one of the 2024 Top 543 Best Workplaces in the United States?

 No.

Am I honored and excited that other companies will take note and see the new trend: The Win for All?

 Yes.

Eight years ago, I was struggling to find a path forward. Today, I can proudly say that Susco is thriving and I am continuing my own personal growth and development alongside the company. Growth is an ongoing process — it’s a commitment and a journey I choose to undertake every day. And I am proud to be on this path with Susco.

I'm happy to share the tools we use to drive culture and employee development.  Just shoot me an email.

 With Love, Gratitude, and Growth!
