Ph.Diaries: Entry #1

Who is Michael Sacoto?

I am a Black-Hispanic male who has overcome many challenges and barriers throughout my personal life, academic pursuits, and career journey. I am a product of the foster and community college systems and humbly recognize that I would not be where I am today without the resources and support these systems are designed to provide. I am an education and workforce development professional by day and a husband, puppy father, scholar, and avid runner by night. I value growth, leadership, and community as I believe it is essential to hold oneself accountable to learn, lead, and uplift others.

Why a Ph.D.?

I have always been intrigued by leadership and education. A healthy combination of the two can drastically impact the lives of students and their families at a regional and global level. The desire to learn and further understand the competencies that make an effective leader in education is why I choose to pursue a Doctor of Philosophy in Urban Education Leadership. As a professional, I am uniquely situated to immediately practice the theories and strategies I learn from my colleagues and research articles.

Imposter Syndrome

As a first-generation college student and professional, imposter syndrome reared its ugly head several times throughout my doctoral journey, and I am sure it will continue to do so. No matter your academic aptitude or personal background, all students experience imposter syndrome at some point in their doctoral pursuit. From personal experience, the only solution to combat imposter syndrome is a strong support system. I am lucky to have an amazing wife and a group of mentors who have kept this engine of curiosity running for six years.

The Doctoral Journey

Briefly, the journey is truly a roller coaster. There are HIGH ups and loooow downs, but the growth within each interval cannot be measured.

The Celebration

Today I celebrate passing my first of two qualification exams. The approval of my literature review is a great accomplishment as it aligns with my dissertation research topic. I celebrate this milestone with my support system. I would not have made it this far without you all!
