The Circuit: Steering Software Solutions
New vehicle technologies like battery-powered drivetrains, ADAS and autonomous systems pose challenges for automakers and Nexteer as we design future steering systems. Innovations in software, Steer-by-Wire, steering columns and intermediate shafts can address many of these challenges, enhancing performance, safety, and passenger comfort.
Stowable Columns & The History of Advanced Safety
In autonomous Steer-by-Wire (SbW) scenarios, Nexteer’s Stowable Steering Columns enhance driver comfort and performance by redefining the “behind-the-wheel” experience. When in self-driving mode, the column retracts into the dash to provide more cabin space, practical for working on-the-go, reading, eating or enjoying some extra comfort.
With more than 300 million columns supplied to date, our advanced steering columns and intermediate shafts (CIS) help protect drivers around the world. Software also plays a role in providing safety and security features in our CIS technologies, like memory recall for power column position and electric steering column locks for anti-theft systems. With Nexteer’s proven CIS portfolio and engineering experience, we work with our customers to embrace and solve their challenges which ultimately provides drivers with a safe and comfortable experience behind the wheel.

Collaboration + Redundancy = Advanced Safety
Motion control technology is crucial for both driver assist and autonomous driving. An increase in assisted and automated technologies means that the safety net must ALWAYS be on. For steering systems and other subsystems, this means evolving robust requirements for redundancy. In other words, the higher the level of automation, the greater the need for additional layers of backup systems.
Collaboration between OEMs and suppliers is crucial in autonomous motion control applications. They need to take a comprehensive approach beyond just the subsystem, such as steering, and innovate the motion control solution at the chassis and vehicle levels while considering different application scenarios such as shared mobility and hands-free highway driving.
