Cheapest and low latency AWS regions from Israel

If you are wondering which region to use from Israel on AWS for learning or small non-business critical applications, please see below some of my conclusions. For large, heavy use or business critical applications, a more thorough analysis is needed.

Intro and reservations

  • Comparison was based on price and latency. There are many other considerations, for example supported features. For the purpose of this simple analysis, the assumption is that you are looking for basic features supported in all regions.
  • Comparison was done based on some benchmarks. You specific usage might be different from the benchmark.

Conclusions

  1. For non latency critical applications, Stockholm is the cheapest while being relatively low latency.
  2. For fastest access, Frankfurt and Paris are the best

Details

  1. ~30% higher latency for Stockholm compared to Frankfurt and Paris.

  1. Some price benchmarks show that Stockholm is ~7-13% cheaper than Frankfurt/Paris - see sources below

Update 9/4/2019:

Learned the hard way that Stockholm is missing some of the Free Tier support.  Some of the services (like RDS and ElastiCache) can't be used with Free Tier and have to use more expensive instance types.  Presumably the reason for it is that Stockholm was rolled out in December 2018 and has the higher end hardware only. The next cheapest but low latency option from Israel is Ireland.
