2014: The idea

In 2014, a powerful idea was born: property access should be simple, smart, secure, and aligned with how you live, work, and visit buildings. Inspired by the challenges property managers, owners, and residents face with outdated access control systems, ButterflyMX brought the world its first smartphone-based video intercom.

Before 2014, managing property access often meant dealing with clunky hardware, complex software, and expensive installation. ButterflyMX changed all of this. By connecting a smartphone to a powerful Video Intercom system, we reduced costs, improved security, and created a more seamless experience for everyone accessing your property—from residents and visitors to deliveries and vendors.

2015: First install

2015. New York, New York—within the heart of Tribeca—a 32-unit apartment building became the first property to install our Video Intercom system. 

This moment wasn’t only about installing a product, it was about starting a movement. One that transformed your property’s daily operations, enhanced resident satisfaction, and radically simplified how people interacted with your building.

2017: 1,000 communities connected

By 2017, 1,000 buildings were inspired by a shared vision for simple property access. But reaching 1,000 buildings meant simple access was no longer just a vision—it was the new standard, where convenience and security were no longer mutually exclusive.

Communities began embracing solutions that provided their staff, residents, and visitors with an easier, more reliable way to manage entry. They knew that with fewer access-related headaches, they could save time and money and provide a seamless experience for everyone.

2019: Leadership evolution

2019 brought with it our current CEO, Aaron Rudenstine. It also ushered in a new era of strategic leadership and growth at ButterflyMX. With Aaron’s proven track record of scaling businesses, a deep passion for innovation, and a clear focus on you, his leadership meant a stronger commitment to understanding and solving your near- and long-term challenges. This also marked an important point in ButterflyMX’s history by cementing the company’s position as a leader in property technology.

2020: Fueling innovation to serve you better

The growing demand for simple, mobile-based property access in 2020 led to securing $50 million in Series D funding. This investment gave us the resources to develop better products and employ more people to meet the changing needs of a post-pandemic world.

Our focus during that unprecedented time was solely on developing solutions that met your acute and unique operational needs, such as remote property management and touchless access—features that are still widely used today. 

2021: Simplifying your property operations with PMS integrations

In 2021, you demanded solutions that made managing your property smoother and more efficient than ever. We listened by expanding your ability to integrate ButterflyMX with your property management system and empowering you to automate tasks like unit turns, leasing changes, and vendor access—reducing onsite work and hassle.

We continue enhancing our integrations by connecting to more solutions your building already uses, such as top smart locks, popular in-unit devices, and resident experience providers. Our focus is to provide a streamlined way to keep everything connected and enable you to operate your buildings smoothly and efficiently.

2022: Unifying access with the Access Control System (ACS)

2022 brought with it our Access Control System (ACS). Driven entirely by your request to extend the ButterflyMX access experience from your front entryway to every door, gate, and elevator throughout your property.

Our ACS offers a scalable, user-friendly solution tailored to the access needs of your multifamily and commercial properties. Unifying property access under one system saves time, reduces complexity, and ensures a delightful experience for everyone interacting with your property.

2023: Raising the bar with Next-Gen Video Intercom

2023 was the year we unveiled our Next-Gen Video Intercom—a smarter, sleeker, and more powerful intercom. Built on years of your feedback, experiences, and requirements, our Next-Gen Intercom brought enhanced functionality, improved performance, and a modern design. Features like improved video quality, advanced wireless connectivity, and backward compatibility set a new standard for property access technology.

2024: Wrapping up a decade of access made simple with Security Cameras

As 2024 ends and we prepare for 2025, we’re proud to offer you another powerful tool to boost security, convenience, and efficiency at your property: Security Cameras. They’re designed and developed to enable you to provide a complete property-wide access solution and security platform at your building.

Our new Security Cameras automatically connect to our Video Intercom and Access Control System, giving you greater visibility and control over your entire property. You now have a suite of integrated products and services to help you manage and monitor every door, gate, garage, and elevator into and throughout your property.
