Become a SEA LIFE TRUST Trustee (Pro bono)
Since its founding in 2014, the SEA LIFE TRUST (SLT)—the partner marine conservation charity of Merlin Entertainments—has been on a mission to make a real difference for marine wildlife and habitats across the globe. Through vital funding and impactful campaigns, the SLT has supported groundbreaking projects, inspiring empathy and action for marine conservation worldwide.
In 2019, the SLT took a monumental step by establishing the world’s first Beluga Whale Sanctuary in Iceland. Alongside the long-established Cornish Seal Sanctuary in the UK, these facilities play a unique role in driving awareness and providing tangible results that resonate deeply with our supporters and partners.
Now, we’re looking to expand our team of passionate advocates by inviting an exceptional individual to join the Board of Trustees. This is an exciting opportunity to influence global marine conservation efforts and play a key role in shaping the future of the SLT.
Who We’re Looking For
We are seeking a Board Member who can bring both experience and insight to support the SLT’s global development, with a particular focus on growing our supporter base and building connections with a broader network of benefactors. The ideal candidate will have:
Director/senior-level experience within a global NGO (preferably related to nature or conservation).
Proven fundraising expertise in a global context, ideally including experience with US-based efforts and securing statutory or foundation grants.
A strong understanding of charity governance, possibly through prior experience as a trustee.
Commitment to attending quarterly Board meetings (3 hours) in London, with at least one meeting per year at one of our sanctuaries.
Availability for 2-3 hours per month outside of meetings to liaise with the Director of the SLT and the Senior Head of Global Fundraising & Partnerships.
Why Join the SEA LIFE TRUST?
As a global charity, the SLT works tirelessly across three main areas to protect marine life and habitats:
Campaigning for Positive Change
From fighting shark finning and whaling to addressing plastic pollution and regenerating coral reefs, we’ve driven meaningful legislative and behavioral change worldwide.
Funding Conservation Projects
We support projects that protect critical marine habitats, remove damaging ghost nets, and innovate solutions to reduce bycatch in fisheries.
Operating Marine Life Sanctuaries
We own and operate two incredible sanctuaries: The Cornish Seal Sanctuary, rescuing, rehabilitating, and releasing seal pups in the UK and the Beluga Whale Sanctuary in Iceland, the first of its kind to provide a sea-based home for whales transitioning from captivity.
A Commitment to Diversity and Inclusion
At the SEA LIFE TRUST, we celebrate diversity and strive to create an inclusive environment where everyone feels valued and empowered to thrive. No matter your age, race, gender, religion, disability, or sexual orientation, we believe that together, we can drive meaningful change for our oceans and beyond.
