Many of you have seen or have learned of the Red Cross water safety poster which is offensive and insensitive. While I appreciate the statement made by our National CEO Gail McGovern, it is vital that you hear from me and know without equivocation that this type of message is unacceptable. We do not; cannot and will not tolerate messages or behavior that is contrary to our core values of respect and inclusion. Diversity and inclusion are vital to who we are in the American Red Cross of Eastern Pa. It is an essential part of our ability to be effective.  It is essential to our ability to make a difference in the communities we serve. We are committed unconditionally to serving all people and to having a work environment which is respectful and considerate of others. We will not tolerate insensitivity or disrespect.  Please do not hesitate to reach out to me not only with your questions or concerns but also with your ideas and suggestions for how we can be an even more inclusive and respectful community.”  Thank you for your support. Sincerely, Judge Renée Cardwell Hughes (Ret.)

Thank you for the work you do with the Red Cross of Eastern PA. I did see the poster as it was being shared around social media. I found it in poor taste and insensitive. I like to believe that it was poor judgement and not meant to be intentional to insult persons of color.
