Customs and Border Protection (CBP): Intercepting Illicit Drugs

AI predictive models analyze patterns in vehicle crossings, identifying anomalies that human inspectors might miss. Recently, this approach led to the seizure of over 75 kilograms of fentanyl and other drugs.

Operation Renewed Hope: Rescuing Victims

Using machine learning to enhance older images, DHS’s Homeland Security Investigations identified 300 previously unknown victims of sexual exploitation in 2023, rescuing many.

FEMA: Accelerating Disaster Recovery

AI accelerates damage assessment post-disasters, enabling FEMA to prioritize resources and deliver aid faster. By analyzing images of impacted areas, AI helps FEMA deploy teams more strategically.

Training Immigration Officers with Chatbots

A generative AI-powered chatbot simulates asylum seekers, allowing immigration officers to refine their elicitation techniques, ensuring fairer and more accurate adjudications.

Generative AI for Hazard Mitigation Plans

Under-resourced communities often struggle to draft mitigation plans required for federal disaster funding. FEMA uses AI to streamline the process, enabling broader access to grants while fostering resilience.

The Roles and Responsibilities Framework: A Blueprint for AI Governance

Recognizing the complexity and interconnectedness of AI-related challenges, DHS developed the Roles and Responsibilities Framework for AI in Critical Infrastructure. This framework offers voluntary, actionable recommendations for stakeholders in the AI ecosystem: cloud providers, AI developers, critical infrastructure operators, and civil society organizations.

Five Pillars of Responsibility

The framework focuses on five core areas of AI safety:

1. Securing AI Environments: Safeguarding infrastructure from threats.
