An AI Assistant for Building Information

An AI Assistant for Building Information

Rakennustieto (Building Information) is Finland's leading building information service. Founded in 1942, it has provided information on good practices and standards first on paper, in 1997 on CDs, and from 1999 onward online.

I have helped Rakennustieto over the years, for example, in creating their digital strategy.

The new AI chatbot

In September 2023, the company announced that it had jumped on the AI bandwagon.

With Azure and OpenAI’s ChatGPT, and the help of Elev Consulting, Rakennustieto built a chatbot that uses part of the company’s published body of knowledge.

The AI bot is available for paid customers.

Better and speedier user experience

The main motivation for this new service was the will to improve the user experience and speed up searches.

For example, a user may want to know the required height of an auditorium handrail. Previously, they had to know where to look or use the indexes. Now, they can ask the chatbot, which will give the answer and add links to the corresponding sources.

The company has instructed the users to ask clear questions, be detailed, use technical terms, and specify the context. For example, instead of querying, "How does roof ventilation work?" the user should ask, "What is the recommended distance between ventilation openings in the underlayment of a ridge roof?"

Trust

In light of the limitations of existing LLM AI applications, the question of trust becomes paramount.

In this case, the content only includes Rakennustieto’s publication, which excludes perhaps useful but unreliable sources. In addition, the users are professionals in the construction industry. They are responsible for checking that the information they use or refer to is valid.

The future

Rakennustieto is expanding the content available through the chatbot. They are also collecting user feedback for further development.

Using AI with an organization’s proprietary data will become a norm. Still, Rakennustieto is among the first to provide an AI-powered information service specifically for the construction sector.
