5 Secrets to Moxie Your Way to Success

5 Secrets to Moxie Your Way to Success

So, what is moxie? According to Webster’s Ninth New Collegiate Dictionary, moxie is defined as:

  1. Energy, pep
  2. Courage, determination
  3. Know-how expertise

For me, moxie is more of an attitude, a mindset or a way of approaching your work and life.

Over the course of my career, I’ve had the opportunity to speak at numerous conferences and events and to meet an amazing array of successful women. These women all exhibit this essence, this moxie mindset, along with a keen desire to empower themselves to succeed.

Here are some of the secrets that I have learned (and use!) to work and live a life filled with moxie.

1. Rise before the Shine. I call this getting up at the “dark thirty.” Find a reason to get up early even if that means you are up and about before the sun comes up. Journal, meditate, exercise, read. Uncover what you are passionate about and then get up and do it. The first few times will stink (let’s be honest) but I promise you, if you keep at it, you will come to treasure this time. My dark thirty? 5 a.m.

2. Surround yourself with "yay-sayers." Those who are most successful in achieving their goals eliminate the negative baggage or the "nay-sayers" from their lives. This does not mean that you eliminate people who may have different opinions than you do. Instead, you develop a network of supporters that believe in you, will challenge you and at the end of the day, no matter what you decide, they will support you. This could be as simple as a group of trusted colleagues or family and friends. Or, it could be a peer coaching group or a formal advisory board. Remember, the people you surround yourself with will either help raise you up or pull you down. Your choice.

3. Broadcast your success. Why do we feel the need to hide our accomplishments? Don't be afraid to brag about your accomplishments. Sharing your wins helps you to focus energy on what is going right in your life instead of those things that are going wrong, which tends to drain energy. Plus, by shining a light on what you are doing may be the little nudge that someone else may need. Remember, success begets success not only for yourself but others. Let’s share the love!

4. Act with an "I can do that" attitude. When asked to do something, say yes first, then figure out how to do it. Most women are conditioned to say no first and that closes the door to unknown opportunities. I always tell my clients that when opportunity knocks, don’t just crack the door open or worse, slam it shut. Instead, kick it open wide and trust that you will be able to manage whatever is behind that door. It worked for Madonna, Oprah and Dr. Phil. It can work for you too.

5. Banish Perfectionism. This is one of my favorites and while I know there are some men who suffer from perfectionism, women take the cake on this one, myself included. Why is it that we’ve got to get things just right? I’ve got a special phrase for all of you perfectionists out there: good enough, press on. GEPO for short. What does this mean? When you finish something the first time, it’s usually good enough to meet most needs. So, move on! Otherwise, you expend valuable time and energy fine-tuning things that likely just don’t need it. Get comfortable with GEPO. I did.

Pick just one of these secrets, take a deep breath and give it a try. See what unfolds. Then, let me know how they have helped you to moxie your way to success!
