Did you know that paper cups are not so "innocent" after all?  The use of polyethylene is necessary to keep our hands from burning when we hold the paper cup, but is there a better choice to paper cups?  Reusable coffee mugs are the perfect solution, since you get a discount on many coffee shops if you give your own reusable cup, and at the same time they are also environmentally friendly.  Reusable coffee cups, besides being practical, they also save 🌳🌲 trees... lots of trees (20 million trees are cut down every year just to make paper cups)... So you have probably already held a coffee package in your hand that was produced by Bischof+Klein. But we are not resting on our achievements - we are taking the next step towards sustainability. In recent years, we have set ourselves the goal of integrating our coffee packaging films into the circular economy. We have achieved this by replacing existing, non-recyclable coffee laminates. Our new recyclable laminates achieve a recyclability of up to 95% according to the CHI standard. We now offer mono-laminates made of PE or PP that enable a 100% recyclate yield and are free from nitrocellulose (NC) and carbon black colours. These solutions are suitable for every application - from coffee inner liner/vacuumpaks and whole beans to coffee pods and cappuccino sticks. ☕️ Did you know Americans toss out over 10 billion K-Cups each year? Some more great "dematerialization of packaging" news last week: Keurig Coffee Pods new "K-Round," a completely compostable coffee pod, could make a serious dent in landfill bound coffee pods. While these pods require a new Alta brewer, it's a game-changer for single-serve coffee's environmental footprint. Why this matters from a sustainability standpoint: 🟢 Billions of K-Cups end up in landfills annually, and their complex design makes them difficult to recycle ( according to The Story of Stuff Project , the amount of K-Cups that have been trashed in landfills could wrap around the planet 10 times). Keurig's solution could significantly reduce this plastic waste. 🟢 Compostable pods can help facilitate nutrient-rich soil. Coffee grounds are a valuable addition to home compost bins, reducing the need for chemical fertilizers :) 🟢 Seaweed-based pod coatings are both bio based and can create carbon capture benefits. Seaweed cultivation absorbs atmospheric CO2, and using that carbon for good (compared to a single use plastic) is awesome, especially for food applications. 🟢 Keurig's innovation is super curious for me with the growing push for Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) legislation. EPR holds manufacturers accountable for the end-of-life management of their products, incentivizing sustainable design....and designing away the packaging for is an easy way to ensure better compliance :) While there are potential hurdles in scaling and ensuring compostability around the US and the world, this is a promising step toward making our daily coffee ritual more sustainable. Point for thought for coffee drinkers: 1. What is the point of sustainable coffee production when the packaging isn't. 2. And what is the point of sustainable packaging when the waste management system aren't able to process or cope with it. This shows that sustainability is a very conscious effort and involves considerable planning and cost. Involving various stakeholders across the value chain, from material sourcing up to waste management. Some ideas: 1. From non-recyclable or non-biodegradable packaging material to recyclable or biodegradable packaging material. 2. From recyclable / biodegradable to an even more recyclable / biodegradable version in terms of capability of recyclable facility or its reusability. 3. Mail back recycling program which involves consumers' education and communication. In sequence from least waste generation to most waste generation: French press < V60 pour over < Single use coffee pod Even lesser waste generation? Processed coffee (from rejected coffee beans) which focuses on using lesser coffee with maximum extraction. 𝗥𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗞-𝗖𝘂𝗽? It revolutionized single-serve coffee, but its environmental impact has been a hot topic. Keurig marketed them as "recyclable," creating an image of eco-friendly convenience. However, the reality was messy, limited, and sparked concerns about greenwashing (making misleading eco-friendly claims). 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘄𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝘄𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗴? ❎ 𝗠𝗶𝘀𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗰𝗹𝗮𝗶𝗺𝘀: Keurig stated their K-Cups were made from recyclable plastic and could be recycled through a specific program. This involved peeling apart the foil lid, emptying the coffee grounds, rinsing the plastic cup, and sending it to a special facility. While technically true, the process was far from user-friendly. Consumers often found it cumbersome and messy, leading many to simply toss the pods in the trash. ❎ 𝗙𝗮𝗹𝘀𝗲 𝘀𝗲𝗻𝘀𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝘀𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆: The "recyclable" label created a misleading perception, neglecting the actual environmental toll. Additionally, the specialized recycling program wasn't widely available, further hindering its accessibility. 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝘄𝗲 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗻? ✅ 𝗕𝗲 𝗮 𝗰𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘀𝘂𝗺𝗲𝗿:  Don't trust marketing claims blindly. Research the true environmental impact of any product, including its recycling process, and verify if it's feasible in your area. ✅ 𝗗𝗲𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗽𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗰𝘆: Companies need to go beyond just labeling products "recyclable." They should focus on designing truly easy and accessible recycling solutions. ✅ 𝗘𝘅𝗽𝗹𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲𝘀: Consider reusable filters or compostable pods for a more sustainable single-serve coffee experience. Together, we can: 👉 Hold companies accountable for their sustainability claims. 👉 Encourage them to adopt truly eco-friendly practices. 👉 Make informed choices for a sustainable future for our coffee habits.
