It was a great pleasure and a surprise when the Governor of Nairobi, the capital city of Kenya Johnson Sakaja visited our worksite, to check on the progress of the Business Intelligence project, which we are implementing for Nairobi City Water and Sewerage Company. The Governor was greatly impressed by the immense positive changes which the project is already having on their operations, by helping the public utility to seal revenue leakage gaps and boost their overall efficiency. This is according to the Governance Performance Index for 2024 issued by independent research company, Good Governance Africa. This index considered data across four (only for small town municipalities), categories, giving the most weight and consideration to the core mandate of municipalities which is service delivery. According to the overview provided by 2024 GPI they measured all municipalities in South Africa according to: 𝗦𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗶𝗰𝗲 𝗱𝗲𝗹𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆 – Ensuring basic service delivery which includes the delivery of piped water, sanitation and electrical services and refuse removal. The measurement for this category not only considered the availability of this service, but also the quality as well as the support municipalities provide to the most vulnerable (indigent) households in the area. 𝗣𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴, 𝗠𝗼𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗘𝘃𝗮𝗹𝘂𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 – The extent to which a municipality meet their responsibilities in annual planning, monitoring, and evaluation requirements. 𝗟𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗠𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 – Political and administrative leadership to ensure a functional government. 𝗔𝗱𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗚𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 – Accountability, compliance, financial management, financial soundness, and human resource management. Swartland Municipality excelled in all these aspects, showing that we are considered, by independent opinion as the best municipality in South Africa. Executive Mayor Harold Cleophas says: “This is an incredible recognition for our entire municipality as well as the community. It shows that our dedication to good governance and our core function is paying dividends. What we do, is for the betterment of the community we serve, and we are thrilled to be acknowledged for our commitment to improve not only Swartland, but South Africa as a whole. We are proof that where good governance and hard work is the guiding principle, successful government is the result, despite numerous challenges. I am so grateful to all our officials, councillors as well as our community, for this recognition as this is a truly collaborative effort, with everyone playing their part.” END #goodgovernance #governmentexcellence #Swartland #localgovernment #municipalities

The Renevlyn Development Initiative (RDI) has urged the Lagos State government and other states in Nigeria to learn from failed water privatisation in the United Kingdom (UK) and adequately fund public sector solutions to the water crisis. RDI made the call in reaction to the just-released study by the Public Services International Research Unit (PSIRU) of the University of Greenwich which showed that investors in England and Wales’ water sector (largely driven by profits) withdrew over £85.2bn from 10 water and sewerage firms in England and Wales since the industry was privatised more than 30 years ago. My attachment at the Nairobi City County Government gave me a unique opportunity to learn about the inner workings of local governance. Working on the Annual Development Plan and understanding how it feeds into the larger County Integrated Development Plan taught me the importance of aligning local policies with citizens' needs. It’s exciting to be part of such an impactful process that shapes the future of Nairobi." #LocalGovernance #UrbanDevelopment #PublicPolicy #NairobiFuture #LeadershipInAction

USAID #URBANWASH is partnering with Nairobi Water and Nairobi City County to understand how best to improve water quality among the small water vendors that supply a critical service to many Nairobi residents. Learn more about how we are addressing this important topic here: https://lnkd.in/eUGNibVy
How can we improve water quality among small, local water providers in Nairobi, Kenya? Urban, low-income households tend to receive water services from small, local water providers instead of regulated water utilities. In Nairobi, conversations with local stakeholders, and interviews with small, local water providers suggest that improving water quality requires addressing a range of challenges, including the following: ✅ Insufficient monitoring of source water ✅ Contamination risks along the supply chain ✅ Operational disincentives to improving water quality ✅ Demand disincentives Learn more:https://ow.ly/Onym50RMRv1 #URBANWASH | USAID | USAID Global Waters | Tetra Tech International Development | Nairobi water company | Shack Dwellers International Kenya (SDI Kenya) | WASREB KENYA | Nairobi City County | #MuunganoWaWanavijiji

In a significant ruling, the High Court of Uganda at Kampala, Commercial Division, has granted a certificate of urgency for the decommissioning and removal of a hazardous telecommunications mast in Kamwokya. This decision, issued by Hon. Lady Justice Harriet Grace Magala, underscores the court’s commitment to public safety, even during court vacations. ATC Uganda Limited filed the application citing imminent risks posed by the deteriorating state of the mast, which included structural damage, erosion, and potential harm to the surrounding community. Despite facing obstructions from the respondents, administrators of the late Norbert Kahiire’s estate, the court ruled in favor of urgent action, prioritizing the well-being of the public over ongoing disputes. This ruling not only highlights the importance of proactive risk management in infrastructure but also reaffirms the judiciary's role in safeguarding lives and property. As businesses and communities continue to grow, it is crucial to address such hazards swiftly to prevent avoidable tragedies. What are your thoughts on balancing public safety with legal disputes?
