And to end the year, here it is at last! All to Play for is a book about housing design. It is a book that captures 10 years of research and practice into child friendly design, including 10 case studies from the UK and abroad. It tries to make sense of housing layouts, what works and what doesn’t from a child’s perspective, but also for other people, and importantly how this might intersect with residents’ own experiences. We are absolutely convinced that if we are going to get housing design right, then we need to think just beyond the adult perspective. This book sets out a case for why and how. The evidence it includes is the bedrock of our practices’ work, and is something we are confident works. The book is available to pre-order now from the RIBA, with first copies arriving soon. https://lnkd.in/eA6ytEJt

RIBA have confirmed they will not be producing a PDF, so there will be no digital version that directly replicates the book. An increasing number of people are asking me how they can buy one, hence this post. If, like me, you feel a PDF would make the guide accessible to a wider audience, and/or want one, please contact comms@habinteg.org.uk. (I'm not getting paid for any sales, so saying this with the best intentions🙂).. An E book will be available in due course from RIBA for people who require an alternative format e.g. for access reasons. However it does not replicate the font, format or layout of the guide and requires a reader app (not permissable for many large organisations)....just a heads up! https://lnkd.in/eiVxG8km

📢 There's only one NPPF update that matters - the use of the word "mansard" has reduced from five mentions to two! 📢 Seriously though, at first glance there's not too much on design that changes. That's a good thing with the strengthening of design in previous iterations of the Framework remaining. 📢 The emphasis on beautiful has been reduced with the changing of the wording of Chapter 12 now being "Achieving well-designed places" and the word beautiful being deleted in several other places. However, beautiful does remain in several places still. 📢 However, perhaps most significantly for the world of design and masterplanning, paragraph 129 is proposed to be deleted. This was the paragraph that set out uplifts in the average density of residential development may be inappropriate if the resulting built form would be wholly out of character with the existing area. This could be a very helpful amendment!!!

What is the impact you want to make? How will you teach your students, staff, and self to maximize societal contribution and reaffirm their goals? The million-dollar question (literally), "Are the truly beautiful terrace designs that won the NSW Department of Planning, Housing and Infrastructure pattern book competition #strata title?" Two look like they do not have to be, which is fantastic. Just like the thousands of #terraces that already exist in Sydney, they will function well throughout their lifetimes, with owners almost completely independent of each other (unless illogical #planning minimum lot sizes unnecessarily require strata subdivision). A third seems to have common parking at either end of the development. If that parking is common, the future owners and tenants will be regulated by hundreds of sections of legislation, mandatory membership of an owners corporation, the need for a strata manager and control by neighbours over their homes. Does the common parking make it worth that? Maybe, maybe not, but that question needs to be addressed by NSW Department of Planning, Housing and Infrastructure (not the fantastically talented students who did the design!). Congratulations to all the winners. Government Architect NSW Philip Thalis The Hon. Carl Scully Chris Minns David Neustein https://lnkd.in/gnUXbfA5

supports: an alternative to mass housing. I love the original Dutch cover page. A very sharp critique of modernism and its impact on housing design that we suffer to this day. This book, the work done at SAR in the late 1960s, and the open building group have done seminal work in the field of housing. Unfortunately this did not become mainstream, probably due to the lack of standardization in the building industry. In the book, talking of the future of housing, he says that rather than trying to predict the future and design for it, we should actively design for an unpredictable future. The book has many such sentences, which allow the reader to build on his thoughts. There should be a revised edition of this book which looks at this theory in the light of environment and society
