🌍 The COP summit concluded last week with a disappointing agreement which falls to deliver vital support that addresses the immediate and future needs of climate-vulnerable countries. The USD 100 bn per year climate finance goal has been increased to USD 300 bn but delayed until 2035. This effectively adjusts current funding for inflation and delays provision for 10 years. A “too little, too late” approach when we know that the climate emergency demands immediate action. The silver lining is the clear progress in implementing the Global Goal on Adaptation. This will come back during 2025 with final plans agreed at COP30. Despite setbacks, our commitment remains strong. Our work with partners in the Zurich Climate Resilience Alliance and the Urban Climate Resilience Program continues as we collaborate with communities to implement locally-driven interventions. Climate-vulnerable communities are already experiencing the devastating effects of climate change and adaptation has never been more urgent With no time to lose, we are focused on our mission to achieve a more resilient future. Ban Ki-moon making the case for the adaptation agenda - I hope to see more of this throughout COP and afterwards. Climate adaptation (or rather the lack of it) is an increasingly pressing climate justice issue, allowing quantities of unnecessary suffering we should all be moved by. "Cop29 offers an opportunity for a new era of climate leadership – one that prioritises those on the frontlines. I encourage leaders to bring bold pledges to the table that reflect the scale of the challenge. This means simplifying processes, increasing access to financing for vulnerable nations and ensuring that adaptation is treated as an equal priority to mitigation and loss and damage." https://lnkd.in/e4G6NCn8

The cancellation of Regional Climate Weeks this year is a big loss. UN Climate Change has been the main organizer, and the dire financial situation of the secretariat has made the continuation of such events impossible. The regional meetings have been almost entirely implementation-focused, and as a result have been very productive and had a markedly more hands-on and upbeat atmosphere than regular UNFCCC meetings. I hope donors come round to appreciating their value, along with the overall value of the UN Climate Change secretariat, which is facing the most challenging financial situation since its creation.

COP28 marked a turning point by connecting climate change with conflict through the Declaration on Relief, Recovery, and Peace, highlighting the exacerbated vulnerability of conflict-afflicted regions to climate change. From the article: 🪖 The Declaration (not legally binding) is acknowledges the heightened susceptibility of conflict-affected countries to climate change and urging an amplification of climate financing for these areas. 💵 70% of the nations most vulnerable to climate change are also among the most fragile, yet they receive less climate finance on a per capita basis compared to conflict-free states. 💲 the traditional setup and risk aversion of funding mechanisms like the upcoming Loss and Damage Fund may continue to sideline conflict-affected countries.

As we approach the end of COP29, it is crucial to recognize the unique challenges and opportunities that climate change presents for the Pacific region. Our islands are on the front lines of the climate crisis, from rising sea levels to extreme weather events. We, at the UNDP Pacific Office, believe that COP29 is not just another conference; it's a crucial moment for our communities to voice their needs. Together, we can advocate for sustainable solutions that protect our environment.

🌍 Common Principles at COP29 for Climate Action, Relief, and Peace 🌏 People in the world’s most vulnerable places cannot wait for the ‘right’ conditions to adapt to climate change. Climate action in these settings is possible and can offer avenues for conflict prevention, inclusive peacebuilding and sustainable development. At COP29, the international community has come together behind a set of Common Principles for Effective Climate Finance and Action for Relief, Recovery, and Peace. The principles call us to: 1. Understand people and place for enduring, impactful outcomes. 2. Be agile to maintain and boost resilience. 3. Prioritise local ownership and leadership by affected groups. 4. Support collaboration and synergies. The principles call us to action to ensure that climate finance and action are agile, inclusive, and accountable, helping to build the foundation for resilient development and inclusive peacebuilding in the most vulnerable communities. 🌱 Now is the time to ensure that climate finance reaches the people and places who need it most. We need to start applying the Common Principles for Climate Action, Relief, and Peace. “Now is the time to ensure that climate finance reaches the people and the places who need it the most”. We have a great opportunity to do things differently and hold accountable for a responsible and timely climate action.

It's all about they money, honey. The COP29 UN climate summit kicks off in just one week today. The talks are centred around the biggest acronym of the year, or perhaps the decade: NCQG. This jargon salad will decide how much climate finance is available in the coming, ever warming years. Negotiations over who pays, and who receives, are always one of the most contentious aspects of a COP. But what's agreed in the NCQG will have massive implications for communities affected by crisis the world over. Read why: https://lnkd.in/d2YzUBEf
What’s the NCQG? For COP29 and the climate crisis, it’s ‘the answer to everything’
