PUBLIC STATEMENT FROM QUEER LIBERATION BOORLOO: Politics at pride At the 2024 Pride Parade, a number of floats were hassled by Pride WA marshals and police in response to political signage, including Rainbow Labor, Bi+ Community, and Crips Contra Colonialism. We were glad to find that despite efforts many floats managed to get some political signage through. This did not cause any genuine harm. The history of Pride as an international movement for queer rights is rooted in riots and protests dating back to the stonewall riots in 1969. The pride movement in Boorloo shares this history, having been birthed from political activism and mass public protest. Pride WA’s more recent track record does not reflect this, with the attempt to ban a refugee rights float in 2017, and the harassment of the Rainbow Rebelion contingent on political grounds in 2019. All of these attempts to ban political speech at the Boorloo queer community’s most prominent collective day of action have been allowed after backlash from within the queer community. This year Rainbow Labor and BI+ community and others joined the fray. The pride movement, and the parades that happen in Boorloo and around the world do not belong to Pride WA as an organisation, and the integrity of pride as a political movement must be prioritised over Pride WA’s organisational finances and relationships with the state. The pride movement existed long before corporate and state sponsorships, and will continue regardless of those relationships. Political contingents do not remove the festive and celebratory nature of the parade, we can and should continue to push for more as we celebrate the progress and political wins of our Pride movement. Political signage that some may take offence to does not constitute a safety concern. Exposure to beliefs different from your own is a central tenet of liberal democracy which maintains a cohesive society. Pride WA have taken it as a given that the signage constitutes a safety concern and have not elaborated what threat is presented beyond the offence of their corporate sponsors and those in power. Here at dentsu we work hard to create an inclusive, diverse culture where every body feels welcome. Where all our team can be their true authenntic self. We pride ourselves in sharing this vision with our clients and partners. This year marks the fourth year of our ‘dentsu and Friends’ campaign, with OOH space secured from our friends at JCDecaux UK. We placed the pride flag on billboards across the UK, with the design now on display throughout London for an estimated 10 million people to see. The campaign aims to highlight that Pride was always a protest. Hate crime statistics released late 2023 (ONS) reveal that England and Wales continues to become a less safe place for lesbian, gay, bi and trans people. The increase in hate crimes against trans people by 11% in a year, and by 186% in the last five years. Until 2015, ILGA-Europe – one of the continent’s biggest LGBTQ+ advocacy groups, based in Brussels – consistently described Britain as the most queer-friendly place in Europe. But a failure to ban conversion therapy and a toxic row over rights for trans people have seen the UK fall dramatically. According to the organisation’s annual Rainbow Map, the UK now places 16th – below Spain, Greece, Belgium, and Ireland. This is one spot higher than last year’s ranking of 17th place, but down from 14th place in 2022. #Pride #LGBTQ #DEI #Diversity #Inclusion https://lnkd.in/eviTcPgV

Now that Pride is over, businesses have 11 months to decide what kind of ally they want to be to the LGBTQI+ community, and how they want to communicate. 🏳️🌈🏳️⚧️ There are those that are taking meaningful action beyond their own four walls - sponsoring activism with organisations such as GiveOut, making the business case for allyship with Open For Business, or lobbying governments for equality and decriminalisation (Stonewall, Outright International, ILGA-Europe, etc.). For those companies not moving the needle on equality, it’s fine to be silent. Avoid performative allyship, and leave the rainbow communications to the real changemakers. Check out my piece in PRWeek UK for Shape History:
Nobody cares that you’re an LGBTQI+ ally
