🟠 Larger Brands Are Thriving on Shopify YoY Growth: >25% for brands over $100MM; single digits for brands under $10MM. MY TAKE: Larger brands leverage analytics, economies of scale, and strategic and personalized offers to engage their audiences more effectively, where smaller brands just take an ax at site-wide discounts. 🟠 Small Brands Grew More on Amazon YoY Growth: 50%+ for brands under $10MM; single digits for brands over $100MM. MY TAKE: Marketplaces like Amazon prioritize price and convenience, leveling the playing field for smaller brands. BUT this is a double edged sword. Hard to get to customer loyalty and profitability for small brands on this channel. What Does This Mean? 1️⃣ Small brands should view Amazon as a customer acquisition tool while building their owned channels (Shopify, email, SMS) for sustainable growth. 2️⃣ Larger brands will crush smaller brands by maintaining their edge by investing in analytics and refining their DTC strategies with personalized offers. 3️⃣ Across the board, data is the real competitive advantage. Brands that use insights to act decisively will continue to lead.

I've been pretty quiet the last two weeks working with a lot of brands through BFCM. I wanted to share some interesting observations from the brands we work with as we've seen some interesting trends!! So here's the Daasity scoop on BFCM... Larger brands due to brand awareness won!! 🔴 Brands doing < $10MM on Shopify saw the smallest YoY growth, usually in single digits. 🟢 Brands doing > $100M on Shopify saw the largest YoY growth coming in over 25% Sitewide offers drove higher YoY growth vs. those that were category or GWP offers. Bigger brands that did category or GWP outpaced sitewide and GWP from smaller brands showing the importance of brand. Small brands win on marketplaces!! 🟢 Brands doing < $10MM on Shopify saw the largest YoY increase on Amazon clocking in at over 50% 🔴 Brands doing > $100MM on Shopify saw the smallest YoY growth on Amazon, in the single digits. Why? Amazon is easier for most brands from a discovery perspective especially with the subset of customers that will always order from Amazon. Hopefully it can help with brand awareness but we've found that LTV from Amazon is always worse How did brands between $10MM and $100MM do? Middle of the pack on both Shopify and Amazon. It's too early for us to measure retail for these brands that are in retail but early indication is that retail was really good. Is this the death of DTC for many brands? No but it reinforces the need to be sell both in the digital space and the retail space #bfcm #dtc #shopify

When we first set up Continue, I’ll admit we weren’t sure exactly how it would work for brands. We knew in theory, but there was no data anywhere to back it all up. We’re now live with a lot of marketplaces and have been digging into the data. here’s just a couple things we’ve found so far: 🆕 New customers are discovering resale marketplaces organically (not just through the brands website) and entering the brand’s ecosystem for the first time. 🤝 Many of these new customers go on to make purchases in new retail, showing the power of resale to drive engagement across the board. 🚀 On average, customers engaged in resale spend almost twice as much on new retail compared to those who aren’t, making resale an incredible growth driver. We’ve got a load more data that I’ll be sharing soon, but this little snippet is really encouraging. It highlights increased CLTV and gaining new customers, something we’ve talked about since setting up the marketplaces this year. People are reselling anyway, whether or not the brand has a dedicated resale channel. Tap into it🚰

What happened in the world of eCommerce recently? 1. Brick and mortar pays off for Shopify - Shopify's revenue has grown in Q2, thanks to brick and mortar and eCom. The number is 21%. 2. Liquid Death goes big on Marketing - Beverage brand Liquid Death has been trying out innovative campaign ideas and that's been paying off. 3. Wayfair is not doing good, quarterly speaking - Wayfair has announced a 1.7% year-over-year revenue decline in Q2. The home goods market is struggling and Wayfair has to find its way out. 4. Meet Fenty Beauty's first US Retail partner - Rihanna's beauty brand has hit the shelves of Nordstrom, their first retail partner in the US. 5. Seagate has entered Canadian eCommerce - Seagate, the mass-capacity data storage brand has started in eCom. The first thing they did? Offered a sitewide discount. #ecom #canada #ecomnews

SimilarWeb emailed today with their 'The State of Ecommerce 2024: Digital Trends and Strategies for Success'. Though I recognise the trend in these 4 headlines, they seem awfully contradictory! How can we match 'talking green' and 'no compromise on quality' with Temu and AliExpress? Similarly, they point to multi-brand Retailers feeling the squeeze from DTC, while headlining that consumers love a one-stop-shop. Marta Sułkiewicz #similarweb But even if the headlines might be contradictory, I do see their merit. Multi-brand Retailers really are under huge pressure. What's their competitive advantage? It used to be brick-and-mortar store investments - great distribution and presence in the physical world. It was followed by multi-brand retailer's good digital experiences in the early days (2010-2020). These days however, every manufacturer can build a great digital experience with platforms such as Shopify. Meanwhile, Marketplaces (from Zalando to AboutYou, from Amazon to Bol) are levelling the playing field even further. As a multi-brand retailer, Marketplaces are the worst nightmare. A marketplayer who shuns margins and allows even the smallest supplier to swoop in and win buy-boxes. No wonder much of physical Retail is suffering. We are seeing multi-brand retailers pulling back from Marketplaces, giving up a big chunk of turnover, but not losing much in Profit. This defensive move might be too late for many them... what's your take on this?
