This is a brilliant leadership lesson. One of the challenges I come across often in leaders is this: they want their teams to "step up", or "own their patch". But when it comes down to it, they don't always trust them to do so. So instead of handing the ball back, they instruct, direct, tell and solve. Yes, things might get done a little faster (short-term). But there's a massive missed opportunity in ALLOWING people to step up. And then they're surprised when their people don't speak up, aren't proactive or don't assert themselves. Chances are, those people have learned it isn't worth it, because they'll be told exactly what they should be doing anyway.
