Video games. Love them or hate them, they are now ubiquitous. According to some estimates, the gaming industry is over $200 billion worldwide. And over 3 billion people play some form of video games on their phones, computers, or consoles. Video gaming is already bigger and growing faster than Hollywood Box Office revenues. I have had a ringside view of video games thanks to my son Kartikay Kini and his studio Finite Reflection Studios, who have been producing a variety of games for many years. Thanks to him, I now have a healthy respect for the genre, and appreciation for the massive creative and technological effort that goes into producing games. Storytelling is almost as old as humanity. Beginning with narration of tales around a campfire, to books, plays, radio, TV, and movies. We now have a plethora of media to tell stories and consume them. In my opinion, video games are the most complex form of storytelling. Highly rewarding for consumers, and incredibly challenging for producers. Imagine creating a story where your listener or viewer assumes the role of the main character. And is free to explore the world you have created, threading their own storyline. And you as storyteller have little control over the story arc, other than cleverly designed algorithms, software code, and one or more desired end states. Meanwhile, as a user or player, you get the thrill of immersing yourself in a world or a stage that engages your senses, and now with VR, your entire body. I can only imagine where this genre is headed with the advent of AI and other technology that can create even more immersive experiences. Tested à variant of Hanoï towers on Copilot, with eight disks and nine rods, which does not réduire to use intermediate stacks, did not get the simples solution: Question: Solve this puzzle consisting of nine rods and a eight disks of decreasing diameters, which can slide onto any rod. The puzzle begins with the disks stacked on one rod in order of decreasing size, the smallest at the top, thus approximating a conical shape. The objective of the puzzle is to move the entire stack to one of the other rods, obeying the following rules: • Only one disk may be moved at a time. • Each move consists of taking the upper disk from one of the stacks and placing it on top of another stack or on an empty rod. • No disk may be placed on top of a disk that is smaller than it. Answer: This puzzle is a variation of the classic **Tower of Hanoi** problem, but with nine rods instead of the usual three. Here's a step-by-step guide to solve it: 1. **Label the rods**: Let's label the rods as A, B, C, D, E, F, G, H, and I. 2. **Initial Setup**: All disks are on rod A, with the largest at the bottom and the smallest at the top. ### Steps to Solve: 1. **Move the smallest disk (Disk 1) to rod B**. 2. **Move the second smallest disk (Disk 2) to rod C**. 3. **Move Disk 1 from rod B to rod C (on top of Disk 2)**. 4. **Move the third smallest disk (Disk 3) to rod D**. 5. **Move Disk 1 from rod C to rod B**. 6. **Move Disk 2 from rod C to rod D (on top of Disk 3)**. 7. **Move Disk 1 from rod B to rod D (on top of Disk 2)**. 8. **Continue this pattern**, always moving the smallest disk to the next available rod and then rearranging the other disks to free up the necessary rod for the next move. ### General Strategy: - **Recursive Approach**: For each set of disks, move the top \( n-1 \) disks to an auxiliary rod, then move the nth disk to the target rod, and finally move the \( n-1 \) disks from the auxiliary rod to the target rod. - **Use the extra rods**: The additional rods can be used as temporary storage to simplify the process, but the basic recursive strategy remains the same. ### Example for 3 Disks: 1. Move Disk 1 to rod B. 2. Move Disk 2 to rod C. 3. Move Disk 1 to rod C (on top of Disk 2). 4. Move Disk 3 to rod D. 5. Move Disk 1 to rod B. 6. Move Disk 2 to rod D (on top of Disk 3). 7. Move Disk 1 to rod D (on top of Disk 2). ### Key Points: - **Always move the smallest disk first**. - **Use the middle rods as temporary storage**. - **Keep track of your moves** to avoid placing a larger disk on a smaller one.
