How would you give away £100k? The article from the FT (https://lnkd.in/ei2Jkv_N) highlights a new trend within philanthropy of donors ceding control of decisions about how their wealth is given away. David Clarke was unsure how to spend an inheritance of £100k, so asked 12 random people from his local community to work together to decide what to do with the cash (they ultimately gave it to 4 local charities). This is part of a wider trend, particularly amongst those who may have inherited (rather than made) their wealth, of looking to give more quickly and with less personal control over where their donations go. Mackenzie Scott has been part of that trend, as has an Austrian heiress who's asked the govt to tax her more and asked a panel of 50 people to help her give away her €25m fortune. I find these examples quite inspiring, and personally I think it's a really encouraging trend towards better and more altruistic philanthropy. #philanthropy #wealthmanagement #financialadvice

In a private letter ruling published last week, the IRS found that a nonprofit organized to (1) host networking opportunities for local business owners and (2) raise capital for their businesses was not exempt under 501(c)(3). Here are some excerpts from the ruling: > "You are operated for a substantial nonexempt purpose. Your activities include managing businesses, promoting networking events, and supporting businesses in your local area through offering grants to cover their start up costs." > "The facts show that you are operated for the benefit of your members. You are operated to serve the private interests of your member businesses in contravention to Treas. Reg. Section 1.501(c)(3)-1(d)(1)(ii)." > "You did not provide any evidence you assist a charitable class, eliminated poverty, or prevented community deterioration."
