We are excited to share that we had the opportunity to visit LECK Ting Yan 陆霆谚! Ting Yan is Managing Partner at TRIVE, a seed stage VC investing in technology companies creating positive social impact in Southeast Asia. Since 2015, TRIVE has made 23 investments, had 4 exits, and achieved a distribution to paid-in capital (DPI) of 1.6X. Part of TRIVE's pay it forward initiatives, Ting Yan has been part of 1200+ pro-bono 1-1 advisory sessions and the incubation of 100+ idea stage startups. He also speaks at events to trade perspectives on the Southeast Asian ecosystem. One notable point that Ting Yan shared was that it is important for venture capitalists to focus on real exits when investing in startups, in order to return capital to their Limited Partners. This allows for the longer-term sustainability of the venture capital ecosystem and the longevity of the startups that they support. Based on his plenty experience from incubation to early stage investing, we learnt many valuable lessons from how to find good startups/founders, what were the challenges for founders and investors in the Southeast Asian startup ecosystem. We sincerely appreciate Ting Yan's time and the invaluable knowledge he shared with us. His expertise and perspective were truly enlightening. So how is the SE Asia start up ecosystem looking in early 2024? February saw a slight uptick in startup funding within Southeast Asia, reaching $388 million. A step up from January but still shy of the high-impact $1-billion target threshold. Singapore's SingAuto leads with a significant $45 million Series A round. It appears the investment climate favors smaller-scale deals, given the prevalence of seed and Series A rounds in the region's 63 transactions this month. Ranking eighth in Europe for startups with venture capital investment, the newly created Italian Founders Fund (IIFF), with €50 million to invest in 25 companies, aims to boost both the quantity and quality of investments in Italian startups. IFF's portfolio includes four companies, with plans for a fifth. It has already invested in Glaut, a customer research platform, and HR tech startup JetHR. IFF addresses the gap for early-stage capital in Italy, providing structured, hands-on support for startups, including assistance with key hires and strategic partnerships. Despite the presence of other VC firms in Italy, IFF's founder Lorenzo Franzi believes there is still a need for early-stage investment. IFF is entirely privately funded, allowing flexibility in its investments, including backing Italian founders abroad and foreign startups entering #Italy. It aims to attract co-investment from foreign VC funds and support Italian founders with global ambitions. And hey, if they can help bring more innovative gelato startups to the world, who's complaining? Managed by Koinos Capital SGR, IFF represents a maturing Italian startup ecosystem. However, challenges such as high taxes and paperwork remain, highlighting the need for continued public and private efforts to boost the tech sector in Italy.
