Soroban Outcalculates Calculator (1946) On November 11, 1946, a calculation competition was held between Japanese soroban (abacus) and an American electric calculator. The competition took place at the Ernie Pyle Theater (the requisitioned Tokyo Takarazuka Theater). The competitor was Kiyoshi Matsuzaki, a soroban master from the Tokyo Postal Savings Bureau of the Ministry of Communications. From the United States, Private Second Class Thomas Wood from GHQ's Finance Section won the preliminary round to compete. Japan was under post-war occupation at the time, and this competition must have been a matter of pride for the Japanese side. They competed in speed and accuracy of calculations, including addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, and mixed calculations. The result was a surprising 4-1 victory for the soroban. It won in addition, subtraction, division, and mixed calculations. You can watch the video on NHK's website. The electric calculator moves quite slowly in the footage. https://lnkd.in/gJCPtUq5 #OnThisDay #todayinhistory #Soroban #Abacus #Calculator #きょうは何の日 #そろばん #松崎喜義

This is a good explanation for NZ. BUT ALSO a good brief on why and how voting gets used and weaponized as a tool of colonialism and other oppressions. Democracy and voting require an engaged, educated population and the knowledge and humility to delegate to people who are knowledgeable. When things like a groups ancestral and cultural values and held to a vote by other groups with no knowledge as a way to generalize and thus obliterate rights, that's colonialism. Settlers using their majoritized status and ignorance to strengthen their systems of theft and destruction at cost to the Indigenous people, land, and life is not a democratic vote.
