Puerto Rico is set to receive $461 million in federal aid to strengthen telecommunications infrastructure and broaden connectivity. The News Journal reported that a $127 million disbursement from the FCC is on the horizon, along with $334 million from the BEAD program. The FCC funds will bring fixed connectivity to 100 percent of Puerto Rico’s 1.2 million households, while the BEAD funds will focus on telecom resiliency, including an underground conduit. According to Wanda Pérez, president of the Puerto Rican Telecommunications Alliance, by 2028, 100 percent of the country’s locations will be connected to high-speed internet.

The Federal Government has signed the ‘Designation and Protection of Critical National Information Infrastructure Order, 2024, which now classifies telecoms infrastructure as 'Critical National Information Infrastructure (CNII), into law. It is now an offence in Nigeria to wilfully cause damage to Base Transceiver Stations (BTS), switch stations, data centres, satellite infrastructure, submarine and fibre optic cables, transmission equipment, e-government platforms, and databases, to mention just a few. This is because they are assets which form the backbone of modern communication networks and the digital economy and are supremely important for supporting the nation’s economic, political, and social life, protected by the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC). The inevitable consequence of the law is to strengthen and protect investments in the telecoms and ICT sector by ameliorating dropped calls, poor internet connectivity and poor Quality of Service (QoS) as well as incidences that can damage the operations and functionality of technological systems, infrastructure, and networks, thus improving the QoS usually truncated/affected by disruption and intentional damage. Governor Glenn Youngkin announced approval from the National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) for Virginia’s list of over 133,000 eligible locations that will receive high-speed internet access through the Commonwealth’s $1.48 billion Broadband Equity, Access, and Deployment (BEAD) allocation to connect all Virginians to high-speed, affordable reliable internet. This approval supports Virginia’s efforts to close the digital divide and deploy internet networks to areas without broadband. “Virginia remains firmly committed to bridging the digital divide across the Commonwealth so all Virginians can thrive in our digital world,” said Governor Glenn Youngkin. “Coupling this historic investment with the state’s ongoing broadband efforts, we are confident that we will connect all Virginians that are currently unserved to high-speed, affordable internet, therefore solidifying Virginia’s place as the best state to live, work and raise a family.”
