Stranger in a Strange(-ish) Land In the state of anxiety that for many was post-Brexit Britain, in 2020 together with my wife Rebecca I took up residence in Belgium. We currently divide our time between Manchester and Brussels, holding a 5-year right of residence in Belgium under the Withdrawal Agreement, and run a subsidiary of Latitude Law from an office there. Spending much of my time outside the UK, I often reflect on the migrant experience, and how we as immigration and refugee lawyers can forget the huge life changes a move across borders entails. It can be a lonely experience. You don’t know anyone – or barely anyone – in your new home. Meeting people is certainly harder the older you get – I’m in my 50s and opportunities don’t present themselves like they used to. Life in a busy city like Brussels has many advantages, but it can be isolating seeing residents getting on with their lives while you are living away from your family and most of your friends. There are many positives to Belgium – great country, great infrastructure, great beer. It’s just an hour’s flight or day’s drive from home, and pretty much everyone speaks English despite my attempts to insist on French. I look like a large percentage of the locals. How different for say a single Afghan, unable to recognise and read English script let alone speak and understand the language, alone in a northern British town. Perhaps a downside for me is that it’s too close to home, making it easier to divide one’s time between the familiar and the strange. I always try, when meeting a new client for the first time, to draw on my experience and put myself in their migrant shoes. It’s not just about securing lawful residence; it’s about a state of being, of belonging, trying to achieve this outside of a small diaspora perhaps. And how much harder if you're fighting for the right to stay? Most have adjusted incredibly well to life in an alien environment; many will find it hard, and we are well to remember that. #immigration #righttoremain #belgium #uk
