Pro tip. You heard it here. Make your first offer your best offer. There is a shortage of talent in the public sector. Candidates have oodles of options. If you’re fortunate to have awesome candidates to choose from, show them a lot of love up front in your offer. It’s 2024. Not 2019. Not 2002. Not 1990. We don’t negotiate back and forth and back and forth with top talent anymore. Those days are gone bye-bye. In this market, if you want to attract outstanding candidates, run a candidate centric process and demonstrate how much you want them by making that first offer enthusiastic and irresistible. Period.
