When TV News channels and stations make the transition from traditional crews to MMJ or VJ, there is a lot of anxiety amongst the photographers - what will I do? We have been midwifing this transformation for more than 30 years now, and I can tell you from endless personal experience that TV news photogs make the best MMJs or VJs, bar none. We have found time and time again, that some of the best TV journalists in house are the photogs. Last week, we wrapped up another TV storytelling bootcamp with CBS News and Stations. Everyone reports, shoots, edits, tracks and produced two stories during the bootcamp - all done with an iPhone and nothing else. Check out this story done by Tom McNamee, Chief Photog for CBS News O&O WBZ | CBS Boston. Great shooting, obviously, but also great character, great storytelling and great narration. Proof once again that more often than not, the best video journalists in your station; the best journalists in your station, are your photographers. #video #iPhone, #journalism #news #reporting #photographer #videographer

When your favorite Teen, Hanley House (who happens to be Miss America's Teen) more than understands the assignment and the brand photos you created together flash across your tv screen. This is what it looks like to put your images to work. This is what it looks like to use them to stand out and communicate your story with your audience. This is what it looks like to use them to help you step onto a bigger stage. Take a lesson from this incredible 16 year old who is doing everything to perfection. #marlanasemenzaphoto #youriconicimage #personalbrandphotography #personalbrandphotographer

'In terms of the brief from Era, I knew mainly she wanted a colourful and vibrant video, mainly focusing on her and her performance. She wanted to keep it very simple only having two looks but these would dictate the creative in a way in terms of where we would shoot her. As the song is about her partner taking her for granted and her realising this to better herself, she wanted to make the performance speak for this through actions & choreo. From this brief and with the budget in mind, I decided to emphasise her performance more than the narrative and wanted to choose somewhere which would allow for multiple shooting scenes. Finding a stunning location and doing a recce, I planned out each part of the track and where each scene could take place, as well as how her outfits would work with this too. Getting Adham and The Banquet on board really helped as he was able to visualise the budget and make it fit within what I required for the video. Also crewing up I decided to get DOP Michael Richard Johnson onboard, being a fan of how he works with colour which is important to me in my work. Putting together a shotlist and studying the track, I plotted out where each scene should take place and where we could fit in small pieces of narrative to work with the tracks lyrics.' #TerryPaul #Directors #Directorsroster #LondonProduction #VideoProduction #Filmmaking #Cinematography #Filmmakers #Creative #Photography #Cinema #FilmProduction #FilmCrew #Documentary #FilmisLife #Lovefilm #Brands #Advertising #Content #ContentProduction #ContentMakers #CarIndustry #Creativity #Culture #EraIstrefi

You can't tell a good story without good visuals and compelling natural sound. As a reporter that started out as a photographer, I've been able to tell people-centered stories that couldn't have been accomplished without meaningful visuals and audio. Here's a look back at a photojournalism reel I put together earlier this year that landed 1st place in the Indiana Association of School Broadcasters College competition recently. Of course, I didn't learn all this by myself. Through my educational experience, some of the best mentors in the business have coached me and helped me break some really bad habits — Don Schoenfeld, Terry Heifetz, Tim Underhill Some of the things I've learned from them: -Anticipation, anticipation...be one step ahead of the action and keep an eye on what your subject will do next. Doesn't hurt to ask either. -What can I capture that is making sound? Sound drives attention. -It’s not what you hear, it’s how you hear it...capture the ears, capture the eyes. -Where can I fit my camera/GoPro to get a unique perspective? -When doing standups, put some movement into it and interact with your environment. -Always have a spare SD card handy... I've still got a lot of learning to do, but I'm always excited to learn something new every day. #StayHungry #Photojournalism #Storytelling

Help me capture a once-in-a-lifetime moment: My mom, who died over a decade ago, wrote me a letter on her deathbed to open on my wedding day, and I want to preserve this memory for generations. Why? I wish I had more memories of my mom on film, so capturing this moment feels worthwhile—not only for me but for my future children. One lesson I learned from her death is this: Make the most of life by being both present and prepared. So, I’m preparing. I’m looking for a documentary-style filmmaker who can capture the essence of this day—whether or not they’re a traditional wedding videographer doesn’t matter. Ideally, someone who can film the wedding and the intimate moments leading up to it, including the opening and reading of this letter. If you know someone who could help turn this memory into a beautiful short film, please let me know! And if you don't know anyone but want to help me, please consider liking, commenting, or sharing this for more visibility!
